Oil Change Q...

When changing the oil, the Honda "Bible" says to change the washer on the drain plug everytime you change your oil. How important is it to do that? I've changed oil so many times I couldn't count that high and never changed one of those washers. Of course, I never did it on a 2k2 Civic either. Thanx for the advice.

the washer should be changed everytime....its a very weak metal that compresses when you tighten the screw, obviously it can only be compressed once, so if you use it again it may not seal properly and you could start leaking........

good for you! you saved $.35 and you're risking an oil leak... Personally, i can spring for the thirty-five cents to prevent the oil leak but hey... it's only my car.

If you go to the dealer and buy like 10, they go for about $1.50. A new engine is like $4,000!!!

i think you are going a little too far.. oil leaking from your car is NOT gonna kill your engine. leaving it without oil.. WILL. as long as all the engines internals are properly lubricated at all times, you have no worries.

i mean sure, it's a good idea to change the washer, but not changing it on each oil change is not gonna kill your engine!

Well, I 've done so many oil changes in my life and I 've never changed anything but oil and filter.
By the way, I know they don't change them in the dealer unless is bad!

It's called a "crush washer", and a proper oil change on our cars should always include installation of a new washer to ensure proper sealing of the plug. It's listed somewhere in our manuals or on the Honda Owner's Link site. As with everything else in our manuals, it's entirely up to you whether or not you want to follow their instructions (just to save a few pennies).

If the dealer is not doing it, either they don't know what they're doing, they just don't care, or they're trying to save 10 cents on every oil change they do.

Yah just got back from da dealership and picked up two washers for a buck. The guy said it was really important to change the washer every oil change. And Honda changes it all the time. Thats why the keep a big drawer full of them in the shop

jeez, just change the damn washer.

Its there for a reason, why would they put a washer in the first place if you didnt need to use it?

Re: Oil Change Q...

Think about all the aluminum trees that are being killed just because of the senseless changing of crush washers. It's not just about 10 cents, think of the environment. Every day is Earth Day. Do the world a favor and plant an aluminum tree.

Re: Oil Change Q...

^^
well pretty much if you crush the washer once, its basically another piece of metal that doesnt do anything. if theres no purpose in the washer, then why use it?

Re: Oil Change Q...

Put it in the ground, water it twice a week and wait for the new aluminum tree to grow. I haven't changed mine in 4 years. No leaks. Ever.
