07 Hybrid AC woes

I seem to recall that there is a separate sub forum for this but my mobile device is not rendering the site properly.

Haven’t problems with the AC on my daughters 07 Hybrid. If I jumper relays or the pressure cutoff switch it works. If not, nothing. No compressor no condenser fans etc.

Finally gave up and took it to my trusted mechanic. He’s incredible. And it stumped him and he has given up. Said that it appeared to be some sort of a high temperature switch that is either in or on the compressor. But there’s no reference to it anywhere.

Could I get some guidance here, and is there a workaround to replacing that compressor? Seems overkill for a temp switch, and it looks like a huge job.

Re: 07 Hybrid AC woes

There is a thermal protection circuit on the compressor, at least for non-hybrids. I have exactly zero experience with the hybrids. Usually this is in series with the compressor, meaning it will not work at all if broken. Not even jumping the relay would engage it.

Again, zero experience with hybrids but I'll spit ball some ideas.
-Does the A/C button in the cabin work properly? Some indication that A/C is enabled?
-If so, you should be able to feel the compressor relay click. Start the engine, turn on full A/C. Remove the relay then slow stick it back in just enough for the spades to contact. Do you feel a click?
-Have you verified no fuses are blown?

Thanks for the reply, BrotatoChip! Is this thermal protection circuit a single component; can it be replaced?

Yes, the control head shows "A/C On." No relays clicking, no fuses blown.

Again, the thermal protection is usually in line with the compressor clutch. If it were bad, jumping the relay wouldn't allow it to turn on. You did say it turns on when the relay is jumped, correct?

Failed relay? Using a meter you should be able to tell if the relay is powered on. You can also check the low pressure switch you mentioned earlier.

Re: 07 Hybrid AC woes

The vehicle's not in my possession right now, the shop still has it. When I put jumpers over the clutch, condenser, and cooling fan relays, it worked as expected. When I took it to the shop, the mechanic jumpered the low pressure switch and it worked.

If it is indeed the thermal protection, what is the fix? I can't find any specific part listed. Is it included with the clutch, assuming the clutch can be purchased separately? There is SO little documentation about this vehicle -- This is my granddaughter's car and I've been involved just to try to save my daughter $$$. I'm tempted to tell her to sell it and get a different vehicle for her.

I see that the hybrid's compressor is itself a hybrid -- it has an electric motor to power it when the engine is stopped.

You should start here. Hook up a set of gauges and see what the pressures read. Could be a faulty low pressure sensor.
