2009 Honda Civic Hybrid a/c Problem
2009 Honda Civic Hybrid a/c Problem
Can’t find any specifically related threads but I’m new so don’t shoot me if there is.
Here are the details.
A/C compressor locked up. New on installed 05/13/2022.
This is our first hybrid and I can’t figure this out for the life of me. After installation the compressor does not kick on and neither does either fan. I will attach the service write up from Honda that is rather useless I will add. Below is what I have tried.
New compressor.
New climate switches on the dash.
New relay for the compressor and fuse for the condenser.
Pressure gauges read fine after Freon. It is worth noting that I only ran the system for 3-5 minutes because I was worried that jumping the relay and condenser fan would mess something up. I do not think this is a low pressure issue.
Jumped the thermal protector. No change.
Thank you for reading and I’ll take any help I can get.
Back story: Brothers car. He is in Physician Assistant school. Dropped the car off for me to work on. He took my Backup for the meantime.
Re: 2009 Honda Civic Hybrid a/c Problem
Did you learn anything? I am in a very similar situation with regard to symptoms:
- 2007 HCH
- AC not cooling (was low on coolant, now everything stopped)
- AC clutch not engaging (will briefly if I jump the correct relay wires)
- swapped relays - no help
- NO fans run
I've heard that it can go into "cripple mode" and the PCM can shut down the compressor and fans if the coolant is low (and it was), but I'm not sure what to do next.

What are the pressure gauges showing now?
Jumping the thermal protector worked finally and I have just left it that way since the new one i ordered didn’t work either.

Re: 2009 Honda Civic Hybrid a/c Problem
My AC skill/experience becomes very limited very quickly. My pressure gauge equipment is limited to the free one that came with my Freon can.
Without being able to engage the clutch, I’m not sure his I can recharge it, considering the low side pressure is very high without the compressor clutch engaged. I know there is a leak, and that the Freon levels were slowly dropping (AC slowly got worse, and the last time I checked with the Freon can gauge it needed more but I was out)
I briefly tried to manually engage the clutch by jumping the relay and adding Freon at the same time - hoping to kick things on. That didn’t go well.
Apologies for my ignorance. I’m decent with a wrench, but electric and pressurized systems start to test me quickly.
