Just bought car from guy who said dealership recommended replacing expansion valve. Ac quit the other day. Checked pressure low side showing retard. Of course checked fuses and relays. Compressor spun freely. So I changed expansion valve. Pretty much same issue compressor will not engage.

Just a suggestion for the future: If someone is selling a car and says it just needs "this part" to work, and especially concerning the a/c system which the typical sales pitch is "it just needs freon", Tell them to either fix it first, lower the price considerably, or walk away from it.

Is the compressor engaging? if not, did you tap on the compressor pulley while the engine is running, climate control + a/c engaged to see if it's an air-gap issue between the compressor clutch and solenoid? Yes I tried that. Read a few threads and that’s the common fix. But not in this situation. No leaks pressures at static are good. Wondering if it could be the thermal protector set
