Complete AC Replacement
Complete AC Replacement
Just took my son's car into a trusted local mechanic because the AC is no longer functioning. Compressor turns on, but no cold air. Mechanic tells me the entire system needs to be replaced... Compressor, Dryer, Condenser, etc. Looking at a bill of around $1500. Based on my troubleshooting, this doesn't really surprise me, but the cost seems a little steep. I have owned 12 Hondas over the past 25 years and I never had a problem with the AC on any of them. Does anyone know if there are any recalls? Any TSBs? This particular vehicle has had more problems than any of my previous Hondas combined. I'm just a little pissed and looking for guidance. My 2006 6MT Accord that I am currently driving has been a maintenance dream. Any feedback is greatly appreciated. What you got? Thanks!
Re: Complete AC Replacement
Get a second opinion before dropping that much.
If you bought it used and someone put in some stop leak crap then the whole system could be shot.
Usually the clutch shims just need adjusting.

Re: Complete AC Replacement
Will definitely get a 2nd opinion. Bought it from a Honda dealer with 9K on the clock. 75K now. Would the shims make a noise and cause the warm air?
Re: Complete AC Replacement
Generally on a long drive the AC will work for a little while and then stop working and then start again if the shims need adjusting. If it is just blowing cold air it might just need a charge. I might try to give it a charge and see what happens.
Re: Complete AC Replacement
Okay, so I highly doubt anyone put anything in the system that would destroy it.
