Question Blower Fan Not Working - 1999 Civic

Hi everyone.

I'm new here (obviously).

Having trouble with my 1999 Civic EX (2 doors). Had a rattle in my blower fan. The squirrels like to drop a lot of acorn shells. Wondered if one got into the system, LOL. Maybe I left the windows down one day and one dropped one in a vent. Haha. Mostly joking.

Anyways, never could get the blower motor out. Should have had it done when I was in a local shop last year or two ago.

Well, the blower quit. All of a sudden.

If you turn the **** (speed) with the A/C in, it will still glow green. Cold air will come out, so compressor still working. And yes, heat will bleed out, too.

I'm guessing:

1) Fuse? (I hope)
2) Blower motor (next easiest?)
3) Resistor(?) - under the glove box?

Would like to hear some informed options. Blower motor simply will not engage. Had a rattle in it for some time, though. And now here comes Mr. Winter.

I'd appreciate any simple help diagnosing this thing. Don't have much money so I'll have to fix this myself and the most efficient (read that cheapest) way.

I appreciate help. My Mom bought this thing new, off the floor (and the other Civic I have). These are my two cars and all I have. The 1999 is doing all of my transportation at this moment.

Any help or advice you can give is really appreciated. God bless you all.

Check fuse #55 under the hood.
Test fuse and voltage:

Remove fan and test with a 12v source. Doesn't spin replace it. Junkyard OEM fan is cheapest and best replacement.
Search write-ups and YouTubes for blower motor removal.

Resistor location and replacement:

Re: Blower Fan Not Working - 1999 Civic

Thanks for the advice. What do I need to get that blower fan out? It's like 3 bolts or screws? I haven't been able to get under there.

If it's a metric bolt, I'll have to make sure I've got the right socket. Thanks for all your help!

Go buy a metric set, everything on this car is metric. Can't remember if it's 3 or 4 bolts, there's a pretty good video on YouTube

Thanks. Figured metric. Saw one video a couple years ago. The camera was bouncing around so much I gave up, LOL.

I'll search for other videos. Gotta find that fuse box location, too and check as instructed above. Thanks for all the great info guys! (and gals!)

Re: Blower Fan Not Working - 1999 Civic

Well I bought a new 40A fuse and replaced the old one (kept it). Did not fix. Sigh. Hoped for a $4 fix. What a dreamer.

I pulled and looked at the relay(?) for the blower motor. No obvious damage but that's probably meaningless.

I'm about to order a new blower motor and a resistor too, since I've got a 25% off coupon. Figured couldn't hurt to have the parts. The $35 blower motor / fan combo I looked at a few years ago is now $61. Yowza. Hence the coupon.

I'd hit a junkyard but won't really have any time to do so right now. Plus the weather is starting to suck.

I still need to watch that video. Thanks again for posting it!

Nice! Thanks for that tip! Closest one was $35. I got a new one with fan for $45 (plus tax of course) so not too bad. I would have spent the difference in shipping and half the difference in gas.

STILL a great resource. I am definitely going to keep that in mind for the future! Thanks again!

Your welcome.
I hope you get a long life from that aftermarket fan. Probably good maintainence to remove it and clean every six months or so to help it last and perform optimally.

Exclamation Re: Blower Fan Not Working - 1999 Civic

Hi guys,
A little update. My NEW parts from Advance AP arrived last month. New blower fan and resistor (just in case). Got it all loose but couldn't get it out and didn't want to damage anything by forcing. Unit on firewall was blocking it. So I removed kick panel on right (and the plastic screw went flying - maybe in car - can NOT find it yet so I need another one). Junk yard may be too far away so I'll maybe just order another plastic screw for the kick panel (black - right side front 2 door).

Finally got to mechanic guy up the street. We got together on the one night he had free. I offered him $20 just to put it in (pull the old one). He did it in 10-15 minutes. Didn't want me to pay him, so for free. Nice guy, I'll find another way to pay him back.

GOOD NEWS -------> NEW blower motor runs like a champ - fast, powerful, quiet. After hearing that rattle for the longest time. It's a Carquest. Was $60.99 before 25% discount. Without wheel (I got a new wheel) it was $53.99 before discount.

Yeah, there was an acorn shell or two in there.

Was thinking about getting another motor (only) and cleaning this blower fan and putting it on there as a spare. Dunno. The fan is a little dirty but basically undamaged as far as I can tell. I'll have to look more closely.

I need to return the resistor - it was ONE day after the return period closed that we got the work done. Don't know if they'll allow it.

Now on to other problems, eventually with the 1999. Same guy is going to help me get my 2006 back on the road too. Truly a God-blessing. Gonna save me a ton of money.

Re: Blower Fan Not Working - 1999 Civic

I bought a new pair of Wearever drums and Wearever brake shoes for the rear. May not be premium but at least they're new. Car has 155,000 on it so I decided new all around. Had already put on new rotors and pads up front. Rather than resurfacing again. Just all new. Hope to have my mechanic friend install them one of these days. Yeah I could probably do it but the weather is starting to get cold in my area. Too cold to do much outside and don't have any garage space.
