Key fails intermittently
Key fails intermittently
It's a crap shoot whether or not my keys (same problem with 3 different keys) are going to cause my engine to start. When I put in the key and turn it everything is fine the majority of time. Too often though nothing happens. The electronics will light up but the fans don't come on when it is not going to do anything. Sometimes the fans do come on and it doesn't start. Sometimes it works on a second try. Sometimes it works after I remove and replace the key. Sometimes it works after I have removed the key and gone for a walk. When it does work the car starts right up. I've done every silly thing I can think of such as rocking the car, jiggling the steering wheel, slamming the gear shift back and forth. Sometimes it works after theses shenanigans and other times it doesn't. My mechanic said he can't diagnose the problem if it is working so I'm basically waiting for it to fail permanently. Last night I thought I was finally there. I called AAA and arranged a tow. After about 10 minutes or so (during which I repeatedly tried the key) I got a call back that the driver was 10 minutes out. While I talked to him I gave it a try and it started right up'. I get nervous turning off the car when I am more than 5 miles away from my mechanic.
Any thoughts?

Re: Key fails intermittently
I would guess the ignition switch is on the way out.
No blinking key light in the dash when it's acting up?
