2008 Honda Civic EX Mystery Leak
2008 Honda Civic EX Mystery Leak
A few weeks ago I noticed my passenger's side carpet was damp. I also noticed the windshield was really fogged up from the inside. The mechanic I took my car to said the evaporator drain for the AC was working properly and he saw water coming outside the car while the AC was running. He cleaned out everything to make sure. I ran some water down both the sunroof drainage holes and watched the water come out by the front wheels right away. I took some soapy water and sprayed it around the windshield and door windows. I then sprayed some compressed air around the windshield and doors from the inside. No air bubbles.
I really don't want to take the car to the dealer. Any other suggestions? Could it be a clogged cowl drain? The weather stripping looks like it is in good shape. No obvious tears or signs of damage. I only notice the dampness on the passenger's side and it shows up after a heavy rain storm. I let the car sit for a week and still noticed it so I don't think it's the heater core. The engine doesn't overheat, the heat inside the cabin works very well, and the liquid on the floor is definitely water. It doesn't smell sweet.
I don't see any water stains on the ceiling or around the doors.

Let it dry then get a friend to spray it down with a hose while you're inside looking for the source. I had a leak in my '02 once because the sunroof drain tube was dripping water onto the hood release cable who's grommet wasn't fully seated.

I have an '08 Civie EX Coupe.. rather similar problem... had same issue today when getting in to the car.. condensation on the inside of windshield, door windows and the sunroof. The only difference is the other day when trying to locate where water is getting in I changed the Ac setting to Not-Recirculate.. I normally have it on Max AC and Recirculate.
Yesterday is also the first day in a while we have had no rain.
We have had torrential downpours recently, probably near 30 inches in the last month.. found the front carpet wet/damp passenger side. Removed all the dealer/factory added floor mats covering the carpet, and it looks like there are signs of dampness problems.
The drivers seat also many times seems damp when I get in.
Though the same thing at first, as that's where research post lead me, the Sun Roof drains.. It is been posted this is a common problem, and especially in torrential downpours where more water can leak in than the drians can handle.
Still looking for the issue, left her open today, windows, and sunroof... she's pretty dry now, I'll leave her open again tomorrow.

Re: 2008 Honda Civic EX Mystery Leak
A little update. I took the Civic to a car wash and had a friend sit in the passenger side while I blasted the front door, sunroof, and windshield with the washer in the car wash bay area. After doing this for a few minutes we then took off the plastic around the A pillar and kick panel at the bottom of the door. The airbag right on the A pillar was a little damp. I am wondering if it's bad windshield seal or gasket. I also noticed some mild corrosion at the top of the windshield from the inside when the plastic was off.
Like I said I poured some water down the sunroof drains and everything drained properly. Maybe I bring the car to an auto glass place to inspect the gaskets around the windshield.
Water leaks are annoying to diagnose.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

I agree almost as hard as chasing the battery drain issue I had...
Been chasing a similar leak in my '08 Civic EX Cpe for a few weeks now.
We've had torrential rains for 2 months and it always seesm like my drivers seat is damp when I get in the car.
No real stains around the Sunroof/Headliner, or in the courtesy lights or Sunroof controls.
Sunrood Drains, at least in the front are clear and drianing well... not sure if there are drains in the rear of the sunroof can't see back there.
The other day I got in my car, lots of condensation inside the car, the drivers door, inside, and the drivers windwo, the windshield, and the sunroof glass were wet. As soon as I cranked the car, ac on, the windshield completely fogged up.
I also have damp carpet passenger side under the AC area, have pulled the carpet back and it does not appear to leak/drip after the fact there.
Checked the AC drain and it seems clear and working, let car run in hot sun with AC on for a good 20 minutes and plenty of water drains..
Many times I get in the car and it has a musty smell, I pulled the factory mats and you can see the underside has signs of moldy stains... carpets look new, except that area passenger side below the AC/Evaporator area where the carpet runs up the firewall looks dark like it had water damage.
Leaks suck...

Re: 2008 Honda Civic EX Mystery Leak
Just to provide an update on the situation. I contacted my insurance company, GEICO and explained the situation. I asked if I was covered even though my windshield was not physically damaged. They confirmed coverage and a claim was submitted. Safelight came out and replaced the windshield the next day. The technician arrived right when he said he would. He called 10 minutes before to let me know he was on his way. He replaced everything right in the driveway. Took him about an hour. After the windshield was replaced I waited an hour to make sure it was safe to drive the car. I didn't hear any wind noise and everything looked great. I had the heater cranked at the floor position and my passenger's side floormat had been removed to allow the carpet to fully dry.
Over the next few days we had a pretty big storm. The next day I checked the carpet and it was bone dry. I'll keep monitoring it, but I think the windshield replacement took care of the leak.
With all this car stuff I now want to replace my shift boot and ****. Any good recommendations? It's a 5 speed manual.
