Passenger Footwell Leak
Passenger Footwell Leak
Hi all,
I bought a 2005 Civic EX (manual sedan) this past July. For the past few weeks there's been water in the passenger footwell. I took it to my mechanic last Friday, and he said that when he unplugged the a/c evap tube water went everywhere. He cleaned it out and I left the carpet up for a week to dry. I checked it last night before putting everything back in place, and it was wet again. This time, it's only wet near the passenger seat (rear of footwell), and there's not enough water for it to bleed through the carpet; only the padding underneath is affected. Originally it was leaking enough that I could see water coming from under my dashboard, but that's not the case anymore.
I took it back to him today and he couldn't figure it out. I've tried spraying it with a hose, but that didn't help. It's definitely water, but it doesn't seem to be worse when it rains. His only explanation was that if there's a sunroof drain between the passenger and rear doors that would explain the location of the water. He suggested that I try and find a glass specialist, and Honda said it would be $100+ for the first hour of diagnosis.
Does anyone have any other suggestions?
Thanks,
Kristen

Re: Passenger Footwell Leak
the only thing i can think of is your heater core or heater core hoses leaking, if that is the case then your coolant level would be decreasing, is it?
try smelling the water, coolant smells sweet and has a very distinct odor, although the carpet might mask the odor,
are you sure you dont have holes or cracks in the floor where road spray is leaking into the car?

It's definitely water. I was driving around with an extra bottle of coolant and checking it every time before driving, but the level was fine.
At this point I'm assuming it's water coming in either from the door or from tire spray. I guess I'll take the hose to it again and hope this time will be different. Thanks for the response.

Re: Passenger Footwell Leak
What I have seen:
Sunroof drain is not between the doors. Front drains are ahead of the front doors in the kick panel area. I have seen hoses become detached for unknown reasons...
The other ends drain outside the rear trunk area of the car behind the wheelwells.
Water can enter the interior through a door panel if the vapor barrier (plastic sheet) is torn, unstuck, or missing. The plastic sheet is supposed to cover the inner door skin openings, it can get ripped when someone tries to peel it down or is just careless.
Evaporator drain tube/hose, some people manage to kick it off (depends on the design though).
Pull all the carpet up around that side, grab a flashlight, drive through an automatic car wash?
The padding under the carpet can hold a LOT of water.
I'd pull the carpets up and prop with boards, then put fans blowing under there overnight. The car will stink like mildew pretty soon if you don't fix the leaks and get it dried good. You can pull the seat off the floor and out of the way too, 4 bolts and a few wires.

Re: Passenger Footwell Leak
I don't think it's the sunroof, since it seems like that was my first leak and the current one is in a different location. I took the hose to it today, and sprayed inside the tire well, around the door, and from underneath, and it didn't get wet so I don't think it's road spray either. It's also not a substantial amount of water, as it was dry this morning after leaving the carpet up overnight (last time I literally vacuumed out gallons.)
Re: Passenger Footwell Leak
I had the same thing, mine was self induced.
I passed my power for my amp through a gromet whole
behind the passenger wheel.
Then the next rain I noticed the floor soaked.
If you jack up the car remove wheel
remove plastic cover
then if you look back toward door there are
holes and one has a gromet.
That is also where they tell you to pass you
fog lights if you have them.
I screwed mine up and ended up using silicon caulk
no more leak
