Boosting a 98 EX

I'm looking to build up a civic. Don't know much about them. It's intriguing because it's cheap compared to my hobbies and I like loud spinny bois. Who doesn't right??

Main HP goal down the road 350WHP.

Keywords are down the road.

I want to get all the supporting mods besides internals for now and still be able to drive it and make boost. Maybe 10 psi with a decent tune with or without e85? If any of you big brains got time to throw out a parts list on parts I'd appreciate it alot! As for internals I got a shop machinest who could source me out some stuff based on what I get for the build. Definitely plan to go wiseco pistons and scat rods though. He did the machine work on my 5.7 sbc years back and it was a monster.

Re: Boosting a 98 EX

350 is likely gonna need a lot more than 10psi. I'd venture a guess 20-25psi should meet your goal at a minumum, and make sure you have a damn good tuner. 10psi might get you at 200, if not encroaching on 200

Are you gonna be starting with the OE D16Y8?

it's the 1.6 liter. I'm still shopping for cars btw, once I find out what to stay away from and whats gold, and in my budget I'll pull the trigger. But the 98ex is definitely the sleeper look and price range I'm looking for. In good shape good milage they are going for 1300 around here.

, I just wanna make MAX power on stock internals without scattering the the thing while I wait for heavy winter to approach so I can pull the motor and go all out.

just tryna future proof fuel system, turbo, etc. 400 whp would be **** to since I'm already in the damn thing.

Money really isn't a issue, so anything that is CRUCIAL I'll pay top dollar, but I sure do wanna brag to my buddies that my ebay turbo $1500 granny car gapped their 6.0L noise maker.

I found a company with good reviwes that deals with Hondas a few hours away also!

coil overs, wide tires up front? Any other stuff to name? My GTI had a dog bone that was notorious for going bad under 2 step launching constantly..

I honestly planned on lowering the car just so the tire is nipping the fenders, with a nice pair of Volk 5 spoke wheels. *the best looking wheels yet to be made*

Re: Boosting a 98 EX

i removed the front anti-roll bar and have a rear progress 1" bar with higher negative camber setup in front, for example.
higher power cars will require less negative camber in front, though, but will be whinier in corners

Re: Boosting a 98 EX

You'll want proper tires, decent coilovers, and upgraded brakes at minimum.

Do you plan on swapping or not?

Re: Boosting a 98 EX

hondas are momentum cars, they will be poking the rear end of higher powered cars easily in corners (maybe not as easily as miatas). Camaros are sitting ducks in cornering to hondas and we poke our noses in their asses.
6th gen cars are lighter and have the double wishbone front suspension, thus much better in cornering than my 7th gen car. They oversteer nicely while my 7th gen simply... squeal the tires and don't turn.
my miatas (have two) are way above my civic, sadly (ah, that feel of controlled 4 wheel slide is... unspeakable!)

no, I don't wanna get into a huge project. I'm just looking to plug and play for now. Also beat **** to make it fit.

then engine build should be out of your target, thus 350 WHP is also out of your target....

Dense

When it comes to hunting down certain parts that only fit x model, and hunting down random **** to get stuff to work I'm not with that, engine can be pulled, rebuilt if specs are good and replaced in the same day. I don't mind hard work. But I don't like work that is wasting my time. I don't want a project to sit around and drink beer and chit chat with friends about how much progress I've done.
I want to bolt parts on and drive.

All the 6thgen civics were 1.6L. It was more a question of if you were gonna stick with the D16Y8 SOHC VTEC or swap in the EM1 B16A2 DOHC VTEC (which is a completely different beast when compared to the D16Y8, by the way))

Re: Boosting a 98 EX

You'd be better off swapping an engine than boosting if you want an easy project. The B-series pretty much just bolt in. Turbocharging is a much more tedious (and NOT bolt-on) process.

You can achieve 200whp with a B18C and some mild head work. That's more than enough power in that platform. Plus, when you feel like boosting, stock internals are good for 400-ish
