I have a 99 dx hatch(d16y7) that always ran fine but was missing a valve cover bolt. Took valve cover off today to take a look and was a broke bolt in the the threads. I tried extractor, but couldnt get a good bite, so i drilled out and helicoiled it. Put it all back together with same gaskets and new honda bond in corner spots, and now it sputters and temp guage is well over half way instead of below halfway. Anyone have any idea what could have happened? I did best to vacuum shavings while drilling and not let anything fall in. Would that be even a possibility of why this is happening? Any info is appreciated, tried google searching but cant come up with much.

Thanks in advance!!!

Shouldn't affect it. Fan working? Any bubbles in the rad?
how do the plugs look?

I was going to suggest it was a coincidence as well. A failed head gasket on a D series isn't an uncommon occurrence.

Just seems wild that it was fine, and then few hours after doing helicoil both happen? I was thinking i let shavings or something fall in and now its clogged a passway or something? Would the head gasket cause the sputtering upon acceleration that is also happening? Both started immediately after.

TIA for your input

gasket is easy to check.
Is coolant reservoir full and spilling coolant?

Re: Removed Valve Cover and Now I Get Overheating and Sputtering

Update:

OVERHEATING
Threw in my old cluster and it seems temp guage is completely off. So have old cluster in for now because it shows normal. Fb cluster needs to be recalibrated.

SPUTTERING
I noticed one of the spark plug gaskets was torn, replaced the torn and its still happeneing. Going to replace the other 3 to see if that helps.

I will update again once i have more new info or ideas. It seems like ignition and not fuel issue.

Checked plugs they look good, also the sputtering only happens at low rpms. When at high rpms runs fine...

Would taking valve cover off and putting it back on cause either of those to go?

Re: Removed Valve Cover and Now I Get Overheating and Sputtering

Again it shouldn't, but the plugs could be coincidental. If the distributor isn't tightened down enough you may have bumped it.

Re: Removed Valve Cover and Now I Get Overheating and Sputtering

UPDATE:

Noticed oil in air box, so changed oil and pcv valve.

Pcv wasnt rattling and also had oil in the tip.

Starting to think it may be a clogged oil passage... 😰
