Mystery: civic intermittently dies.
Mystery: civic intermittently dies.
1996 Civic LX. 213K MILES.
Symptoms/back story:
originally car was dying because it has wrong battery in it and that got fixed but the symptoms persist. There's not rhyme or reason to in it; it happens whenever it wants at random times...some days it doesn't happen at all, other days, you can't drive more than a few feet without it dying. It idles very smooth, there's no whines, no rough idles. Sometimes it will only turn back on if in neutral other times if it's only in park.
WHY ITS WEIRD: there are times when it dies and I shift into neutral and push slightly on the gas pedal and the dead civic will turn itself back on. Another weird thing it's been doing is that while driving (any speed), the rpms will go from appropriate to zero. If I give it gas it will die and turn off. If I wait a few seconds, the rpms will return to appropriate levels and I can continue driving.
I need some ideas here guys, because I'm running out of money and patience fast. What do you guys think it could be?
So far, I have replaced:
- the battery- air filter- fuel filter
- starter
Other info:- have done an oil change.
- I did have to jb weld the transmission covering because I wound up in a hospital for six hours and the person who drove it to pick me up hit something hard and cracked it. The JB weld has held on up but I keep an eye on it just in case.
- the fuel pump is still clicking on I don't think that's a problem.
- why would the car turn itself back on though?!

Re: Mystery: civic intermittently dies.
I'm not pulling any codes. The battery light turns on like when your cars dead. I put a brand new battery in it, a new starter...Im going to be replacing the spark plugs next.

Re: Mystery: civic intermittently dies.
starter motor does not have anything to do with the engine running...
looks electrical/electronic issue.
grounds ok and tight? all connectors and sensors in place and fully plugged? No damaged wires to engine? Etc
