Engine compatability?

hello this is mustang rich new member.im seeking advice and info on engine compatability.i have a 98civic with d16y8 and want to know if a 2001 civic engine will interchange and all of the details involved if its possible. The 2001 has manual trans.i havent got an engine code yet for 2001. All i have is a photo of engine.can purchase donor car for $400 if i can use the engine in my 98 civic.will someone be kind enuff to walk me thru this before i buy the car to find out it wont work.i thank you for your time ,trouble and support.thank u much

The 2001 is a 7th gen (D17a1/D17a2), you have a 6th gen. Different engines. I'm sure it could be done but it's much more in-depth than just swapping parts.

7th gen don't have distributor, so you will need the new ECU.
But ECU needs the key programmed (anti-theft) and the ignition that reads the key.
all the other sensors - i think they might be different.

Thank you for the reply and the info.i had no idea the complexity of a honda interchange.this is why i came here.i seen a chance to possibly save money buying. The2001 for $400 rather than $1350 for used engine from japan.do i have any other options ? If u would be kind enuff to point me in the best direction im all ears.thank u much for your trouble

Don't bother trying to put the wrong engine in.
look for 98-00 they should drop right in. 96-97 will also work but some things may need to be changed
