Rpms randomly drop and it won't accelerate

Rpms randomly drop and it won't accelerate
When I'm driving sometimes the rpms will randomly drop so low the car almost stalls and when it does that even if I put my foot the floor with the gas pedal it won't accelerate and the rpms won't increase. Any ideas what could be wrong? This is my second car ever so sorry if it's something really simple.

have you being doing maintenance in the car?
what have you checked?
dozens of potential causes
best is to take to a mechanic and have them diagnose. If iffy estimates, come back here
or get a friend that knows cars and give him a 6 pack for diagnosing
