Please help!! High RPM’s…

Hi everyone. I’m fairly new to the mechanic world and this is my first forum of any kind. Now with that being said. I have a 2000 civic ex coupe with a 5/MT and about 172,000 miles. I’ve had her for about 8 years now. A couple years back I was at work and went to leave an I would say at least half maybe more of the power to the car just gone. It would barley accelerate and this was when I would just take her to a local mechanic whenever problems occurred. So I found mechanic with good reviews on Google. He had it for a couple days and called me an told me my car is ready and good to go. So when I get there we go for a test drive an I didn’t have anymore power than went I dropped it off to him. We argued for a little an then we went about our ways. Well what was causing it was the little metal cap piece inside my open air intake filter came off an it was blocking the opening to my throttle body inside my intake pipe….. well everything since I took it to that mechanic I’ve been have this problem with surging rmps but only while the car is moving. For example if I’m going 45 mph in 3rd gear (doesn’t matter what gear though) and I put her in neutral the rpms with stay at about 2000 sometimes almost 3000 rpm an right when I’m about to come to a complete stop it just drops back down to 800-1200 rpms. Another example if I’m stopped on a decline and I leave it in neutral an just let off the brake as she starts to roll an gets about 5-10 mph. The rpms just jump up in that 2-3000 rpm range then again as I am almost to a complete stop they drop back down to the normal range. I have searched everywhere on the internet. I have put in new 02 sensors, distributor/rotor, spark plugs, speak plug wires, clean the crap out of my throttle body, no vacuum leak from the tests I have done as far as I can tell. I’ve put in a new exhaust manifold, new radiator w/fan and hoses, new fuel filter, new MAP sensor, new Vtec solenoid and I’ve checked all my fuses. This problem has never gave me a check engine light though. It recently was on for code p0300, p0301, p0302, p0303, p0304, and p1399. I did a valve adjustment myself and the engine light stayed off for about 200 miles. When it came back on this time it was for one code (I don’t remember what it was exactly) and it said the system was running too lean due to a large vacuum leak. I’m pretty sure it was cause I had a fairly large hole in my flex pipe on my exhaust right before my cat. Fixed the hole and it’s been another couple hundred miles an the engine light has yet to return. Sorry for making this story time lol. But if anyone has any insight about the high rpms it would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!! Thank you.

Still sounds like you have a vacuum leak coming from somewhere.

But my engine doesn’t stall when i come to a stop it just falls down to normal range. When the idle jumps it’s like clock work. As soon as i get to about 7 mph. It jumps. An if I could stay rolling down a hill in neutral the rpms would just stay at about 2300 rpms. But the engine never stalls and I don’t have any hesitation. It only started doing this after I took it to that mechanic. Never did it prior.

Then take it back to the mechanic then.

High idle is also a symptom of a vacuum leak, not just bogging and stalling.

It’s been a couple years since the mechanic worked on it. I was uneducated about my car back then an didn’t think much of it. Plus that mechanic is no longer there.
