RPMs won't decrease
RPMs won't decrease
Hi everyone, I'm new here and have had my 02 Civic EX for about 6 months now. I have come here for some good advice but now I need some help.
I was just out driving and my revs would not decrease. I didn't think much of it at first (could be just warming up longer than usual) but then I noticed I could just coast in gear and the tach would not go down. I tried pressing the gas and it started revving up near the redline and would not go down. I quickly turned the engine off. I checked the throttle (my first guess) but it seemed fine, so I turned it on again and the problem persisted. The check engine light came on. I can drive it - I drove down a few neighbourhood streets and and home again - but it's worrisome. Especially when it shot up near 6000 rpm and I couldn't do anything other than shut it off. It stays around 2500 rpm if it's just idling.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much.

Re: RPMs won't decrease
are the revs actually going that high from what you can hear? or is it just the gauge reading high. if its the engine revving, you prolly have a bad TPS (throttle position sensor) which pretty much tells the ecu how much you are pressing the gas pedal. check the engine code to be sure. if it is, youll need another throttle body. used ones on ebay are around $50 for the whole thing and you can just swap it in with all the sensors on it. make sure you get the correct version depending if you have manual or auto trans. it matters.
