My Son drives a 2000 Civic EX with SOHC VTEC. I think it is a D16Y7 engine. Recently, it threw a P0131 so I replaced the upstream O2 sensor which cleared the problem. However, it later threw a P0420. The car has 165k miles. I ordered a new catalytic converter and am waiting for my Son to bring his car so I can replace the bad cat. Is a worn out catalytic converter common on these cars and has anyone had to replace theirs?

Catalytic converters will always go bad over time. I would say 150k to 200k is usually when they start going bad.

they are designed to react chemically and will have reduced impact overtime

Replaced the cat and downstream O2 sensor and the check engine light is now gone. Car also seems to have more pep above 5000 RPM. The old cat was visibly clogged with no light shining through. While I was down there I noticed the drivers side CV axle boot failed and exploded grease everywhere so that is the next project.

Just an FYI if you bought a cheap cat that code will be back in about a year
