Need Radio Help

Hey guys new to the forum, my friend gave me a 98 civic lx sedan for free. Im thinking of do a restore maybe not sure yet. The engine has been swaped out for one of those Japan engines, milage unknown, size of motor unknown. I will say it runs great, the guy who gave it to me dumped like 2.5k into the various things wrong. So my first question is how do i find out what motor i have ? my second question is i have a 99 civic coupe radio with cd player that is brand new, will it fit into my 98 civic without mods ?. Thanks for any help you guys give me.

Re: Need Radio Help

To find out what motor you have, stand in front of the engine bay, looks down and to the left (passenger side) of the exhaust manifold. You'll see a flat spot with an engraved alphanumeric code next to where the engine mates with the transmission. That's the engine code. If it's a 6th gen SOHC engine, I'd venture a guess you have a D16[xx]. D-series engine, 16 would denote 1.6L.

Granted, that pic is from, what looks like a B-series (DOHC engine), but the engine stamp is in effectively the same location

The 98 civic LX came stock with a D16Y7, a 1.6L SOHC non-VTEC engine, rated at 106bhp, 103ft-lbs torque

I'm not familar with the 6th gen radio setup, but I'd venture a guess that it would.

Re: Need Radio Help

if it's an OEM radio, I'm not sure if you'll need a radio code to unlock it like they had in the 7thgens. Hopefully someone more well versed in 6thgen radios can chime in here

It's definitely an OEM radio from a 99 till I don't know what you're talking about where I need a code so it's not just plug and play hopefully somebody will chime in before I start taking stuff apart.

Re: Need Radio Help

basically a security measure that any time power is cut to the radio (e.g. unhooking battery, removing the radio from the vehicle, etc.). You'd need a code to unlock the radio before being able to use it.

Re: Need Radio Help

Yes you will need a radio code. Why put that in when for $100 you could get Bluetooth, usb, and aux?

Re: Need Radio Help

If you buy the deck from Crutchfield they give you the adapter harness and dash kit for free

Re: Need Radio Help

like $20 value. lol

But still nice because it makes it as plug and play as humanly possible. Just rip the old OEM deck out, install the dash kit, wire (solder if possible, if not, use those crimp connectors; don't be ghetto and straight up twist and tape them) the adapter harness to the aftermarket radio harness, then plug it all in and do a happy dance. Dunno if the 6thgens had the same issue as 7thgens, but that dimmer wire hookup (orange) wreaked havoc and fried instrument clusters. I'd play it safe and just not hook it up. Only difference is it'll be illuminated at 100% and not dim with the twisty **** on the dash
