engine cut off.....what happened

engine cut off.....what happened
i was driving up a hill and its at a intersection.the cars come pretty fast and i when i was clear i stomped the gas.the engine just shut off, i could change gears(auto) and the lighs and radio was still on so i turned it off and it slowly started back up but it runs fine now.....what happened?
