odd starting problems

96 civic
starts right up but will shut off in 30 seconds unless i hold throttle over 2000 rpms for at least 1 min then it will stay running
when it dies it just cuts off like i turned key off
before i found high rpm trick it would die 30 sec then 20 then less till it would only crank
what was also odd was when it got to the point of not starting the spark( while some one was cranking it) was intermittent
won't even start on starting fluid

Re: odd starting problems

What happened leading up to this? Any work done? What do the plugs look like? Have you verified timing?

CEL on?
