P0420 and steam coming off exhaust manifold heat shield
Hi guys and girls. I have a question for the group. I have a p0420 code so I bought an aftermarket cat. Won’t be here until Thursday. Can’t install until Saturday. I used blaster penetrating oil to remove shield yesterday. I got home and opened the hood. Steam was coming from the o2 sensor area of shield. I almost had a panic attack when I saw this! Coolant is good and oil is always good. Could this be the oil burning off or should I be worried? Drives good but feel like it’s going to hurt my car? I need to get to work. Is steam coming off heat shield a symptom of something major. Thanks.

BTW I have a 1999 civic hatchback dx 5 spd. No overheating. Just slow acceleration going uphill and takeoff and a stumble here and there.

Yeah it doesn't look to be in the greatest shape any more, fyi the cheap cats will only last about a year before the computer thinks it's "bad"

May want to tap on the rest of the exhaust with a rubber mallet and listen for rattling to see if the exhaust is clogged
Re: P0420 and steam coming off exhaust manifold heat shield
I just put an eastern aftermarket on it. I hear rattling by the resonator but I don’t know if I’ll have time to remove exhaust from pipe A back. I can barely lift my arms after removing old bolts all day. Hope it blows itself out. I bought the car for $1200 and didn’t like the idea of paying almost that much on one part. Thanks for the reply.

See how it drives, if it still feels sluggish and restricted then you'll have to check. Hopefully just the cat was the problem
