Unknown vibration/rattling.

I have a 2000 Honda Civic that is experiencing a noise like a gear hitting something solid when the car is idling in either reverse or drive. The car drives fine and shifts correctly. The noise lessens significantly when the accelerator is pressed but I can still feel it if I touch the gear shifter. You can't really hear the sound from outside the car but it can be fairly loud inside. It sounds like it is originating in the middle of the car basically straight down from the radio area. The car is an automatic with 203000 miles. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Heat shield or something else jammed between the exhaust and the body of the car
