Rep Power: 0 Weird sound while in reverse
Hey there everybody, heres the situation, on my '03 civic ex (completely stock) any time my car rolls backwards it makes a weird winding sound (quite audible too). Sounds like it comes from front near the engine compartment but happens when ever the car rolls backwards not just in reverse. Any ideas of what it could be? Reverses fine, rolls just fine just makes the noise.

Wouldn't worry about it. When rolling backwards, the differential spins backwards too. That means the ring and pinion load is on the OPPOSITE side of the regular drive side. A lot of vehicles make ring and pinion noise backwards. If it doesn't make noise in forward don't worry about it. The normal whine in reverse is because the reverse gears are flat cut, not helical. Helical gears are quite, flat cuts aren't, therefore they always make noise.

Alright cool, its my first civic (small car in general) and i just bought it so i wasn't sure. It just seemed way louder than it should be but it sounds fine going forward. My escape doesn't make any noise going backwards so it kind of had me thrown you know. Thanks for the help man!
