AC Alternator belt issues.

Re installed alternator belt after doing timing belt and water pump replacement. The belt started squealing about a day after I got it back together and drove it to work. I then tightened the ac belt due to discovery that the only time it squealed was when the ac was on. No squealing but now there is a smell of burning rubber. Is there any chance there is a alignment issue with the pulleys, or just too tight, what?

Re: AC Alternator belt issues.

Why and how would the harmonic balancer be the problem?

Re: AC Alternator belt issues.

The outer pulley part is bonded to the center with rubber and after time they can separate

Re: AC Alternator belt issues.

The harmonic balancer is a solid piece of steel he’d to the end of the crank shift by a 19 mm bolt. It is one piece not two and no rubber is involved. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Re: AC Alternator belt issues.

Check the condition of the woodruff key. It may cause the harmonic balancer to wobble a bit, regardless of how tight the 19mm bolt is.

But yeah, there's a big rubber grommet that holds the pulley in place. That's definitely a problem.

Re: AC Alternator belt issues.

Please educate me as to this rubber grommet you are speaking of. Show me a schematic. I’ve done three different Honda timing belt and water pump changes and have yet to encounter a rubber grommet that helps hold the harmonic balancer to the crankshaft.

You don't know what you don't know.

Some aftermarket pulleys may not be constructed the same, but just about every engine on the road has one.

This is mine: one solid piece of steel.

Re: AC Alternator belt issues.

It's actually sold as a single piece, but you see that groove on the diagram? That's what they're referring to.

Re: AC Alternator belt issues.

Considering an actual Honda mechanic told you it's two pieces, not to mention the rest of us telling you it's two pieces. Maybe you should stop arguing

Re: AC Alternator belt issues.

Besides the crank pulley I would guess the lower timing cover mounts are broken causing it to rub against the pulley/belts.
