Bad paint. Trying to sell
Bad paint. Trying to sell
Hi ya’ll I have a situation, I was hoping some knowledgeable people could help me with. My wife has a civic. I forget the year right now (I can check later but it’s not as important to the conversation.)
we need to sell it for some quick cash. Blue book has it around $6-7k, which I think might be a bit high so we were hoping to get 5 for it.
Here is the issue: it had some minor oxidation on its shiny black paint job. My wife thought it would be a great idea to try to touch that up so she watched some YouTube videos and went to work. (Against my strong objections!) in the end, she has made the car so that the back side looks pretty screwed up with a Matt black, obvious and thick coat that doesn’t even blend well. It’s just a bad paint job.
I’m trying to put my foot down now; telling her we need to cut our losses and to just get rid of the car as is.
so here’s the question.
Honda Civic, blue book value of $6k.
screwed up paint job that makes it look like it’s hiding some kind of body damage but, it’s not, I swear! (Lol)
How big a drop in value do you think I’ll need to take, to get rid of it?
thanks for any input.

Re: Bad paint. Trying to sell
Really depends if it’s just on the surface or if the clear coat is damaged and needs a re-spray. I’d list it and let the “experts” decide on what it needs.
Re: Bad paint. Trying to sell
Yeah, I considered just listing it and seeing what people would offer but, I’m wary of people who might over low ball me based on my lack of knowledge. This picture is of the worst side. The other side is also affected but this side is bad. There is some dust (that I shoild have wiped off before taking the picture) but; you can see the stark difference between original paint, which is in good condition and the shitty job that was done over it.
edit* her idea was to do a fine sand job over this first attempt and then apply clear coat. Am I underestimating my wife’s plan?

Re: Bad paint. Trying to sell
Start with 300-400 grit, then some 600, and then the clear. Do good prep work, clean the area with rubbing alcohol or prep solution, and mask off the areas you're not painting

Thanks for that. I’m a bit frustrated because I have zero skill in automobile detailing. We were planning on getting rid of it for some much needed cash and she decided to clean it up first. I immediately jumped to freak out mode and want to cut losses asap lol. But I’ll spend a little more time and see if I can clean it up. Appreciate the responses.

Id advise not to do anything unless you plan on finishing it perfect. Because if the body and paint arent 100% smooth, it will show especially because the car is black. Also you have a strong line that you have to sand down and blend that paint. Not for the amateurs.
If you cant get it perfect you wont gain any value to the car. You'll be lucky to get 4500 because of that paint.
But if you DO plan on trying to get it perfect, then Colin is right, look for Chris fix video. You spend practically pennies for what you would gain in value.
