5th to Nuetral: Look Ma! No hands!

I was driving about 85 on the freeway the other day (bout 3 weeks ago) when all of a sudden my stick went into nuetral. I didn't touch it. Heck...my left hand was on the wheel and my right was lifting my soda to my mouth. Scared the heck outta me. Anyways...What could cause this? It's done it numerous times since but it'll be normal most of the time. Once it starts up it won't quit. I'll put it back into 5th and 10 seconds later it'll pop back into nuetral. Any ideas?

A buddy of mine has an '01 LX coupe and this has been happening to him too. He hasn't been able to get it looked at yet because he's had to deal with some recent engine problems. He thinks that the 5th gear synchro might be going out, which I thought might be a possibility too. If you are covered under warranty go to the dealer and have it looked at. I don't know if this will help but also check your manual tranny fluid level. Good luck and if I hear anything from my friend about him getting his tranny looked at/fixed I'll let you know.

i acutally had this happen to me the day i got my car. my problem was when the put on the shift **** from the factory they turned the **** one to many times and the boot was too tight. so when i stepped on the gas the stick moved and the boot wouldn't let it move so it pulled it into netrual. So try unclip your ****, just pull down on the silver thing, let the boot spin loose then put it back on. Or just turn the **** by hand.

Thats what i had to do. hope yours is that simple

The boot spins freely on the stock ****. So if it was twisted around the shaft, it would have undone itself. The other thing is that if it was 1 turn too tight, the **** would be too far down the shift lever, thus giving you more boot to work with.

Falling out of gear is usually a sign of a bad syncro. Does it grind when you put it into 5th? And Check the tranny fluid level.
