Loud clank when turning steering wheel
Loud clank when turning steering wheel
Alright I started noticing this noise today. When I turn the steering wheel about 30 degrees to the left or right, I hear a clank. You can hear the sound at the same point when the wheels are turned left or right. I'm guessing it has something to do with the suspension? I went over a bump a bit too fast and I'm guessing that might have to do with it. Though I'm not sure.
Any ideas on what it could be? I'm taking it in later to see what it's all about, but I want to know what I'm expecting.

Dude....I have the SAME thing!! I think it might be a CV joint or something in the rack & pinion, or even in the steering box.....I took it to the dealer and the lubed the bushings and re-torqt some crap, but that didn't work...so know I have to go back and have the dude listed with me to the clank noise.....

Mine has had a weird clank or pop to since October when I bought it. BTW I'm completely stock. Mine makes the noise when I turn and start moving forward. I read somewhere that the springs ride on some bearings at the top of the strut area, I wonder if thats causing the noise or if its just the springs twisting.
Well I've been hearing a slight noise for while. But yesterday it got louder. Plus when I put it in park and just move the steering wheel you can hear it. I just hope it's not some expensive damage or anything.
Yeah...I'm stock too....Also I can make the noise sitting in park. The spring issue is a posibility....I'm waiting to put my neuspeed strut bar on until I get rid of the knocking....I hate this! I wish I had time to leave the car with Honda..........Let me know if you find out what it is and if I can fix it myself...Peace
There is a service bulletin out about the front suspension on the 01 Civic creaking, squeaking, popping and all that....check into it with your dealer. Apparently they're replacing the springs and struts because of a defective bushing causing the noise.
Weatherman,
I'm with you on the possibility that this noise is being cause by something in the steering rack/pinion. I've disassembled my suspension numerous times and have replaced any likely culprits.
The noise I'm hearing is caused with a slight turn to the left or right and happens most often when I'm not moving very fast (additional turning friction I'm assuming).
If not the steering system, I'm wondering if it could be the tie rod end ball joint where it seats into the arm of the strut. I wonder if it could be slipping (maybe a torquing and sudden release issue).
Who knows though. I'm so sick and tired of trying track down stupid crap with my car.
Why couldn't Honda stick with tried 'n' true designs instead of utilizing this GAY front suspension set-up. While it may provide better steering input, it is not very "modification"-friendly.

Same problem here. I lowered my car the first week in september, and I never heard this popping sound until like last week. It's pretty loud now and annoying the crap outta me, and scaring me at the same time. It sounds like something is about to fall off

mine is very small. not at all noticable. but when i park in my garage ( ilive in apartment) you can hear it a litle bit. i never hear it when i am driving on the street. i think mine may be normal, i dont feel too concerned.
2002 Honda Civic EX, 4 door, stock: I have the same problem as 'Snowman' and the rest of you. If you turn the steering wheel 30 degrees or more (even non-agressively), you will hear clanking or what I call a rattle type noise (even at a stand still). Also if you hit a speed bumb or a light pot hole (anything other than a smooth road surface) at certain speeds (medium to fast). I have filed a complaint with American Honda and the Scottsdale dealership's Service Director is suppose to help me. They test drove it and they installed a new turn signal canceling switch ("Body, Switch") and a new steering wheel air bag cable ("Reel Assy., Cable"). Both are non adjustable. It helped barely minutely. I knew upon getting into the car at the dealership that it was not fixed by turning the steering left and right. This problem has come up starting with the 2001 model change over to a non double wishbone front suspension ( previous McPherson struts system).
It makes the owner feel like they have a poorly engineered and cheap car. Definitely not Honda Standards of the norm! I feel at this point that if the technician would have inserted the "reel assy., cable" in some sort of styrofoam tubing, that might eliminate the "clanking/rattling" sound. If anyone knows of a bulletin (dealer could not find one) or know the solution, PLEASE LET US KNOW!
