Very dissapointed in my car

Sunday night i started hearing a really high pitched whinning sound coming from car, so i decided that i would take it to the dealership to get it checked out... They tell me that i need a new altenator... Boy am i glad i have 37,500 miles, just out of the range of the factory waranty... They told me it would be 474 dollars.... I have rarely ever heard of any car's altenator going bad at 37,000 miles, especially a honda thats one year old (2001). Just venting a little bit, and also labor is only 100 dollars its the altenator thats going to cost almost 400 dollars...........

You should just buy the alternator and install it yourself. On my Ford...I had to remove the alternator at 138K to inspect the spring. Turned out there was nothing wrong with the alternator, but a mechanic sabatoged my power distribution box (side note). It's pretty easy to do.

the alternator will still work. chances are it's a ballberring if it's just a high pitched noise. my dealer told me $330(in the states) and replacing one is easy, hard part is getting the pulley off but thats not to bad. There have been a couple of people get in really bad wrecks on this site and their cars have been totaled, email one of them and see if they will sell you the alternator cheap if they can scrap it.

On that note, does anyone have an altenator that they would be willing to sell??Although I still think i might just wait until it goes out that way I will no for sure thats it... If altenator truely goes out this early I will probably sell my car, i Just got my ocatne front bumper and was in the process of getting sides and rear, now it makes me just want to start all over with a new dependble car, but thats what i thought a honda civic would be

Every car has problems.. if its just an altenator I would just get it fixed. Good thing its nothing seriously wrong. If you can find out specifically whats wrong with your altenator and your mechanically inclined, perhaps go here and order the defective part and replace it yourself:

Maybe you could write to Honda and tell them you think it should be covered, even though it was technically out of warranty, since it was a fairly unusual problem and the car was very close to the mileage limit and still within the time period. That was one thing about Chrysler, they used to be flexible about things like that. They may cover partially after a deductible too. Worth a shot.

Ok, so its been like 5 days and my car is still cranking on the first try, cd player is working fine, head lights are not dimming and air condition still works fine... Im starting to think there is no problem with my altenator, maybe the sound is something else and the dealership is just trying to rip me in my @ss.......

When my alterator wasn't working my lights dimmed, then the radio and gauge cluster just turned off so I couldn't tell how fast I was going, then the battary light turned on, in that order so if you have a bad alternator you have some warning.(not like thats all that comforting) if none of those things are happening it might be the alternator. When I put on my pullies I had to change the belts twice becuase they were bad and were making noise. Use belt dressing if you change those. I would say double check the power steering just to be safe, it's cost next nothing if that is the case and it is hard to tell sense they are so close to each other. If you are sure thats not it and it is infact the alternator you will have to spend some cash and replace it
