Engine revs to 6000rpm ON ITS OWN

craziest **** happened to me today

im driving along.. not paying much attention and im coming up to a light, and all of a sudden i notice that im not really slowing down... i STAND on the brake and im getting minimal braking power

(the stereo was cranked so i couldnt hear the revs at all.. so at first, that is to say for a split second, i thought it was a brake problem)

i looked down at my tach, and realized i was at 4000rpm

i thought '****! i must be stepping on the gas at the same time as the brake'.. so i physically looked down and i was not pressing on the gas

next thing i did was to throw the car in neutral (cause im still flying towards the light).... now the revs go up almost to redline

i stopped, threw it in park, and shut down the engine, apply the handbrake.....

i thought, ok.. that was strange as hell, but lets get out of the way of the traffic

i start up the car, immediatly (in park) the revs shoot up to 3000... i take my feet off of any pedals just to be sure im not touching the gas

i shut down the car

i did that about 3 times.. till i decided to leave it in park
the revs slowly came down from 3000, 2000, 1500, 1000
and i was able to shift gears again

drove away, had no other problems

WHATS WRONG WITH MY BABY!??!!?

Sheesh thats insane... good thing no one got hurt. You check your throttle cable and parts around it? Maybe you got a bad throttle position sensor(TPS)? Was the gas pedal fully up when it was reving that high? If your car is completely stock that wouldnt be a good thing for Honda.. if you find out what it is make sure you post a msg!

No offense, but why would you post this up here. The dealer is the only one that is going to be able to help you. Although, if it doesn't do it when you take it in, there isn't a problem. Take it and get it checked out and say a prayer that she acts up when daddy comes to look at her.

Sounds like the cruise control servo (if you have one) is trying to kill you!

Ummmm.....this is the Vehicle Issues/Problems section. His story sounds like a pretty big f'ing problem.

If this doesn't belong here, what do you think does belong here?

About it being a cruise control problem........that might be very possible. Have ya'll ever put your car in neutral and pressed the set cruise button? Your engine will immediatly rev on its own all the way up to redline, because it's trying to catch up with nothing. Kinda cool.

damn.. I didn't even think to check if the cruise control master was on or not

as for the throttle cable, i thought about that when i restarted it once and pulled the pedal up with my hand after one of the restarts and it didnt move, it was already all the way up

it couldnt have been the cable tho.. cause the revs slowly decreased

i thought maybe somthing had jammed the throttle open... but it wouldnt have decreased slowly, just all at once

so cruise control sounds like it might be the most likely possiblity

pulling the gas pedal won't release a stuck cable...you are supposed to give your gas pedal a good kick to release a jammed cable...

Because a problem of this magnatude doesn't need to wait on answers from fellow members. It demands repair immediately. That is what I meant smarty.

If I remember correctly, this wouldn't be the first time our throttle plates have stuck...but not so far open.

holy crap! this is scary! good thing you and your car (but not quite) are okay...

i hate it when i bring in my car to the dealer complaining about a problem which is common among civics but getting a dazed look from the technician and says "really?!" pretending that it doesn't happen often and when we go for a testdrive they pretend to not hear any noise or pretend a squeeky clutch pedal is normal *sigh*... i hope your car gets fixed before it happens again!

There was a TSB a while back. I have it printed out at home so I dont know the specifics, but it said something about there could be a loose piece of plastic that could get lodged in the throttle or something which can cause the brake not to work. I'll look for it when I get home if you want.

if you have a stock intake box, what happened was a piece broke off and jammed itself in the throttle body. this is a problem honda released a notice about and they gotta fix it.

I dont think the piece gets sucked into the engine directly, but snaps off and lodges itself in the throttle plate. Not sure if this would apply to you though since your idle dropped.. not sure though.

i said got lodged (not moving) in the throttle body. take off the stock intake and check to see if its still jammed there. if it got pulled through, its sitting in your intake manifold. its not in your engine.

Go lick your ***** again. You obviously missed the whole point of either posts.

Why would someone with a problem of this nature be waiting on answers from fellow members. I don't know about you but if that happened to me, I would be at the dealer cursing. I could see posting this after they had gone to the dealer and found something out one way or the other.

Anyhow, no ones talking to you little boy.

i know what you mean, lodged, but the idle dropped, gradually, which would lead me to believe that it slowly slipped through the throttle...

its a reasonable idea, but i dont think thats what happened, cause if it did and it got sucked through the revs wouldve dropped off immediately

This post is important to be here. If it happens to someone else they can find out it is not just his car. It should require a recall if it happens again enough times. This gives us a heads up on problems with the 7thgen civics. I agree that he should take it to the dealer. Also, I'm glad he told us of the problem so that we could be on the look out to see if it happens to us.

If I remember correctly that thing with the plastic getting lodged was a recall for the ford focus.. not our cars. But maybe I remember incorrectly.

well, im glad to see that a flame war has erupted over my problem

but i haven't been waiting on anyones responses... this has never happened before to me, and it hasnt happened since.. ive been very watchful of everything thats going on

the thing is that i cant take it to the dealer and say 'fix it' cause apparently nothing is wrong with it...

if it ever happens again you can be sure that i'll head in to the dealer to see whats going on.. but for now it seems like there was just some electronic glitch

so ill keep everyone posted if it happens again
