Engine Rattle during acceleration
Hey, I have a 02 LX Manual and for some reason during acceleration my engine rattles. Normally it begins at around 2500 RPM and stops at
about 3300, I think. (or it could be that the engine becomes too loud to hear the rattle at that speed) Anyway, this is my first
manual, and I'm not sure if this is a normal sound, but it doesn't sound too healthy. Is this normal? It stops as soon as I release or
lighten up on the gas pedal.
Also, does anyone else have discolored plastic surrounding their instrument panel? Kinda looks like a grey/black color in some spots and
black in others, like it's supposed to be.
Thanks

Thanks - I'm gonna check that out! This is a weird description, but the closest thing I can compare the
noise with is maybe a tiny piece of metal inside a tin can rolling around. Not too loud, but annoying.
I read in the owners manual, says that use of any gas with an octane level below 86 can cause
a "metallic rapping" noise - I use regular unleaded 87 octane, maybe I should try a different gas
station for a while or something? Thanks for the advice, gonna give it a try!

Wow, you just decribed pinging quite well. Now it sounds to me like you got a bad batch of gas. Since it's already pinging, go fill up at a Mobil or Amoco station with premium and add a bottle of Chevron Techron to clean out the fuel system...that should stop the problem. If it doesn't, you may have a more serious problem.
well i have the same prob, but i would describe it as a whinning sound not rattle ( like some kind of flap opening then air flapping it around or something or like having a bad catalitic converter), especially when i drive through an alley or in the garage with both windows
open i hear this whinning sound when i rev id say fron 2000 to 3500 rpm, i should take it to the dealer and have them look at it, i wont have any problem replicating
it. it happens all the time, i just hate waiting at the dealer, if you guys have any info please share = ) im sure its something minor... my car runs awesome.

civico - that would be great! I made an appointment at the Honda dealership, and the tech rode with me and asked me to duplicate the
problem. He couldn't hear it, selective hearing I guess. That punk bish. I heard it the whole time.
Thank you for your help!!!

Some quotes from Honda:

[hr]On ’01 Civics, the engine mounts can cause an engine vibration or an underhood rattling that's worse with the transmission in Reverse or Drive. To isolate this noise, use a Steelman ChassisEAR to listen to the engine mounts, or install known-good front and left-side engine mounts.[hr]

The solution will cost you $100. I have a 2001 EX Coupe MT and I noticed a rattling noise in excess of 3000rpm. Once I installed a Neuspeed Upper Strut Tower Bar, it tied the chassis together which holds the opposite engine mounts and eliminated rattle. I can rev to redline and it feels as if the engine is more stable at high revs.
That may fix the rattle, but may not fix the exisiting problem. I have also noticed a rattle, but am unsure what it is...my car will be going in for no less than 8 warranty repairs shortly. I'll also ask them to check out the rattle as well as other things. Surpressing the signs of a problem is one thing...fixing them is another!
