Mysterious click sound when trying to start engine
Mysterious click sound when trying to start engine
I have a 2001 Honda Civic LX 5-speed. Last year (2017) I replaced my starter. In July this year (2018) I had to replace the starter again. It lasted for about a month and I had to replace it yet again. Then that one only lasted less than a week. I asked on another site and someone suggested the battery may not have enough juice to fully power the starter. I had the battery checked and it was determined to be bad so I replaced it. I was able to turn the engine over two more times that day before it started the click sound again.
I've checked the wires, the battery terminals, and all are good. I've also checked the flywheel teeth and the starter teeth and they look great. The starter only has two bolts to mount it to the side of the engine and they are tight. Even when you loosen them the starter can only be rotated about an 1/8 of an inch, so I don't think it's angled wrong as it's not making any grinding noises like it can't inner-lock with the flywheel's teeth.
I'm getting tired of having to push the car to get it to start.
Tomorrow I'm going to take the starter out and plug my jumper cables to it to see if the gear arm comes out or if there's a chance the solenoid is bad on this one too.
Any other suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated

Are you buying aftermarket (cheap) replacement starters?
either buy a new one from Honda or pick one up from the junkyard

there are some good small batteries in the market, I have the cobra one.
I suspect you have a charging problem, not a starter problem. you might not have had to replace starter...
Your alternator might not be charging the battery enough. Go from here.

A $3 test light and a little knowledge could save you a lot of potentially unnecessary work.
A voltmeter could be used for the same as well.
