Exclamation No 5th gear & locked out of reverse

I've had 5th gear popping out for months now and constantly grinding and on my way to work this morning all 5th would do is grind so now I'm down to 1-4th gear. When I went to reverse out of my parking spot it felt like I was locked out of reverse. This has happened once but it eventually went in but that was not the case today. Does anyone have any possible causes/solutions?

I have a few more issues such as an oil leak as bad as next to no oil on the dip stick but it runs without issue but I'm going to replace all the oil seals, I need to replace the timing belt since I don't know when it was last done, and I have a steering fluid leak probably near or at the rack. I plan on pulling the motor since it needs this much work but wasn't planning on doing this for another month or so but with not being able to go in reverse I may have to do it sooner unless I can get back into reverse. While the motor is out I plan to replace the transmission with a used one I bought but need to have it checked out to make sure there are no issues. I'd hate to go through all this to put another dud trans in.

Any insight to any of this would be helpful. I'm currently also searching around the internet about some of this stuff as well but always like to get perspective on my situation.

Re: No 5th gear & locked out of reverse

Tranny problem is probably worn synchros, especially if it was popping out of gear. The reverse thing could be synchro related. Try shifting into first, then reverse? I know that was a known quick fix with many Honda MTs.

As for your oil leak, clean it up, top it off, look for where the oil is coming from. Will save you from firing the parts cannon and potentially not fix the problem.

Also consider popping the shifter base up and watch the “ball” in the base as you move it into 5th / reverse to see if it’s split and opening up under pressure. Possible you just have not actually been putting it all the way into gear so it pops out.

And very possible your not leaking nearly as much oil as your burning. Until it stops working, the catalytic converter will keep you from seeing the blue smoke..

^^^ that and check the shifter bushings at both ends. on neons and PT's, fifth and reverse issues are common and are due to a worn or missing bushing which for whatever reason only affects the two gears all the way to the right.

I checked behind the motor and it along with the sub mount are coated in oil, along with the plenty of spots on the garage floor. I found one of the leaks is coming from the oil pan where the pulley is but i know that cant be the only one because oil is everywhere. Also found the where the general area where im leaking power steering fluid and it looks like it's at the rack on the driver side.

Re: No 5th gear & locked out of reverse

Common for the rack to leak out at the steering input.. for some it leaks into the cabin, others it goes down the rack.

Oil comming out around the pulley could be pan, crank, cam, or oil pump seal failure..

oil on backside is failure to fill oil properly, spillage removing filter, or leaking valve cover / cover bolt seals.
