Steering Wheel Free Play Help!
Steering Wheel Free Play Help!
Hello I just bought a 2004 Civic LX from a friend but it has steering wheel play that I just can't seem to fix
I don't have money to replace the whole rack and pinion.
I checked all the joints under the dash and behind pedals, as well as the currently mounted steering wheel. All the joints and bolts you can see under the dash and inside of the car are connected tight with no lose points.
I searched all over the place they read that some Honda's have steering rack gear adjusters that you can adjust loose play with 40mm wrench but upon inspecting my Civic I don't think 7th gen Civics came with gear adjusters (please correct me if I am wrong)
Can someone help me what the possibilities are?
I have picture and video of the symptoms I have.

Re: Steering Wheel Free Play Help!
That looks like a worn down steering rack.
Some people even bypass the hydrulaic power circuit and that results in speedier demise of the component.
To to be certain, have someone else shimmy the wheel while you have the front in the air and make sure the rack is not actually moving with that +/- 5 degrees your their moving the steering freely.

Re: Steering Wheel Free Play Help!
could be worn tie-rod ends too
but do remove the wheel and check if it is not it causing the problems. (who knows if that wheel is for civics?)

Thanks,
I had my friend wiggle/shimmy the wheel within the freeplay and didn't see any movement of the wheels or rods from the rack.
Does this mean I have a bad rack and pinion? does anyone know if the rack and pinion gear is adjustable?
Thanks in advance!
