Is it after you shut off your car? or when it is running?

I was going to say if it was right after you turned it off that is normal BUT since it is while it is running I would say take it in and bitch.

Just because it is a "new" car doesn't mean there can't be anything wrong with it. Take it from me on that one. My car has had millions of problems.

I have a 2001 ex engine too and i also get the little ticking noise, i tried my best to trace it back without getting my face caught in the drive belts and i think i located it going to the pulley sheave just behind the drivers side headlamp, its a pretty obvious location, i havent had any probelms with that ticking and from inside the car i cant hear it. i also mentioned it to the service guy when they dropped my second transmission into my car and they said its a normal operating noise, nothing to be concerend about.

I have owned 4 hondas now, my wife one, and 3 others in the immediate family. I have found that all (everyone that I have had) makes a clicking type noise when it is sitting there idling. I think what you are talking about is completely normal, especially for hondas. I have never ever heard a honda that didn't have a clicking type noise at idle.

I think this particular forum has got some of you paranoid and some members only add to that paranoia.

Not really sure which ticking sound you guys are talking about.

Do you mean the very faint "valve ticking" sound from the engine when you're idling? I thought almost every car has this sound ... at least small cars like ours, which don't have great sound-proofing.

I also have owned a few imports and they all have made the same sound. Nothing to worry about, but it is a little unnerving!

if its what i think you're referring to, its part of the A/C system. Listen near the throttle body.

It is a very noticable ticking, because thats the loudest sound the engine makes when i am standing in front of my car,if i put my head over the valve cover it sounds like it is in there, but im not that worried now that more people say theres do the same... thanks for your replys, keep them coming, maybe someone a( tech ) will have a answer as to why our cars tick.

Does it sound more like a "chitter-chatter" type sound than clicking?

That's what I thought it was....your valves pumping....I know that is totally normal, it happens on my bro's Cavalier and my dad's Ram....I try not to notice it, but easier said than done...once your exhuast is on there, it will be too loud to hear the ticking!

if it's tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick....

IT'S A FOUR BANGER!

There are lots of things that tick:

the coils
the valves
the throttle as the air from a cylinder rushes by...
if you have an intake you will hear a pronounced noise from air pumping into the motor as well all though that sounds lower like a spud-spud-spud-spud (like a roots type blower).

in addition on a 5 speed the cluctches are a bit noisy...

hey avenger,

i agree w/you about the the part you said about a/c . I think the sound is coming one of the parts for a/c. But I hear it all the time even when the a/c is not on.

HULLOOOOO! (knock, knock,knock) Anyone home?

Anyone heard of "FUEL INJECTORS"?

If the sound is a VERY consistent ticking, it's the injectors. IT'S NORMAL!

I will say though that Honda's injectors have seemingly gotten louder over the years. My 1999 Civic EX's injectors were audible but not quite as noticable as my 2001 EX.

the ticking is normal. It is the cam shaft and the rockers moving. If you have ever seen a engine with no valve cover you can clearly see it and hear it.

this is due to the expansion/contraction caused by the engine heating up then cooling off. while i havent noticed in my slowvic yet, it happened in the other 2 cars ive owned.

im having problems with engine noises to but its not a sharp ticking sound, its sorta like a low rattle somewhere. I dont know if its normal cause it wasn't there before and its really annoying. maybe i should let the dealer check it out...

Those 1.7 liter engines don't have hydraulic lifters. They just have manual adjectment screws on them. If they start ticking louder the might need adjected. It is normal to hear them ticking though.
