Engine stalls
Engine stalls
My 2002 civic LX will run for a bit, sometime 2-3 hours and then it starts to hesitate and finally stop. It acts like it runs out of gas. No check engine light but did pull codes. Only one P1298 which is Electrict Load Detected Circuit High Voltage. My son just purchased car and ran the fuel tank to total empty. After filling it the next day this problem started. It sounds just like it starving for fuel, any suggestions? Thanks
Re: Engine stalls
Possibly may have overheated the fuel pump causing the intermittent failure. Or, sucked up debris from bottom of tank into the fuel filter, clogging it. I would do cheapest fix first, change the fuel filter.
Would a defective fuel pump/fuel filter cause the P1298? Could be a coincidence that it came on at around same time as running out of gas. Might be worth changing out the ELD ($20-30 bucks on ebay) and run the idle relearn process.

Re: Engine stalls
P1298 is unrelated to your stalling complaint.
You can buy just the ELD if you want to fix that code.

Re: Engine stalls
I might use a butt connector, crimped--- if the sheath won't melt in fuel.
Or solder the wire together (carefully, don't blow yourself up)
Re: Engine stalls
Repaired wire and did a test hooking power pack directly to pump to see if it would come on. It basically went with a quick hum and then stopped. I would have thought it would at least hum and stay on. I'm just not sure the pump motor is good. Perhaps the broken wire caused it to overheat until it broke-in-to. Anyone had good luck buying a used pump? I think the Honda pumps are better than the aftermarket ones. Any suggestions for a good pump to buy? Thanks

Re: Engine stalls
Hondas pumps have been stupid reliable IMO. I'd chance a used one as long as it hadn't been sitting in varnished gas for years. Hope for less than 100,000 miles on it.
Re: Engine stalls
Pulled fuel filter out of tank and found a broken wire.
Was the wire perfectly split? Was it gnarled apart, like something chewed it apart?
Are you sure you have the correct fuse type in the fuse box for the pump (I think it is #17, under the dash?)? Did someone replace it with a high amp rating because they were having a problem with the fuel pump too?.... Could your ELD problem be somewhat related to the fuel pump for this reason?
If the pump is seizing and drawing a ton of current and you have the wrong fuse in the compartment, theoretically, this could cause a wire to break apart, acting a fuse, which it should not be doing....
I always ask myself.... WHY did it happen? So you can stop it from happening again.... I might be completely wrong here, but you should check...
Re: Engine stalls
Thanks for the comments. My problem now is getting the pump in and the ring around the top. The rubber seems so tight that it want fit in the opening. It did come out, so I know it should go back in. Anyone had a similar issue and how did you solve. I have to o get the pump back into the tank. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Re: Engine stalls
Dip rubber gasket in the fuel.
Insert gasket in top of tank
Carefully slide pump into top of tank through the gasket
note and mark where the first thread begins on the threaded ring, and mark the first thread on the tank so you can align those and spin the ring on.
Make sure pump housing is correctly aligned before ring gets tight.
threading the ring can be a PITA even with the correct tool.
