blown out cam seal
blown out cam seal
05 civic 1.7L non vtec and non turbo. Installed a used engine in my civic. After the test drive engine is leaking oil from under the timing cover. Removed the upper timing cover and found that the cam seal was pushed out of the cylinder head. The new used engine has a valve on the back upper RH section of the cylinder head that the old engine did not have. The cars engine harness has no wiring connector to connect this sensor or valve = looks like a variable oil pressure sending unit. I pulled the valve off of the adaptor housing that bolts to the cylinder head and found that it has a plunger inside. Can I remove this plunger and just reinstall the valve. Not sure what to do at this point.

Post pictures of whatever it is you are talking about. Kinda sounds like a VTEC valve but I want to see first.
It did not cause the cam seal to be pushed out either.
Re: blown out cam seal
I will get pics in the morning. I have been searching online all night and yes looks like a vtec solenoid without the pressure switch = only has the upper 3 bolt solenoid with a spool valve inside.

Leave the VTEC alone. Reassemble it the way it was built, and ignore it.
Now that it has been disturbed it may need some new gaskets if it starts leaking oil.
Replace the cam seal with a new one....hopefully from Honda, I don't remember ever seeing an OEM seal pop out on any of these engines (NOTE the cam seal needs installed a little deeper than flush, about 2mm deeper). If the timing belt got wet with oil, replace it too.
Inspect the PCV system..... the valve on the back of the block and tubing up to the intake, and the breather tube from the valve cover to the air filter housing. Make sure it all flows good and pressure isn't building up in the crankcase.
Re: blown out cam seal
yes it was a d17a1 and installed a used d17a. I have new seal and timing belt not soaked with oil. I will inspect PVC and air cleaner tube from valve cover. I am going to reseal vtec solenoid with anaerobic gasket sealant. O-ring not flat or dried out. I have pics just trying to figure out how to post from my phone. I did send them to my email, but same thing need to figure out how to post them.
