windshield wiper problem

My wipers are hitting the car on the side of the windshield and the grill on the bottom of the windshield hard making thumping noise and it's loud and annoying. My dad said you could replace a gear or something to fix it. It's basically over reaching. What do I do?

Re: windshield wiper problem

Run the wipers, shut the key off to stop the wipers in the middle of the glass.
Get out.

If you grab a wiper and move it, do both wipers move freely about 2 or 3 inches?
If both don't move together, then check each arm individually and see if just one wiper moves freely?

I'll guess: Broken linkage bushing (plastic bushing).

Pull wiper motor and linkage assembly out....
Replace links (rods?) for the wiper transmission.
