Car gets louder @ 3000RPM
Hi all,
I have a 2003 Civic Si-G Coupe (EX Coupe in the US), with manual 5-spd trans. She has 172,000KM (~107,000 Miles).
The issue:
In 1st gear, as I accelerate from standstill up until 3000RPM the engine/tranny have normal volume, then around 3000RPM get exceptionally louder. (Like "grrrrr" 3000 "GRRRRRR"). I'll shift to 2nd between 3500-4000RPM to 2nd gear.
Now in 2nd gear, under 3000RPM has normal volume again, then when hitting approx 3000RPM, the engine/tranny get louder again.... Happens in 3rd gear as well, but not in 4th & 5th.
Is this an engine or transmission problem?
No engine codes....
Car runs perfectly, idles smoothly.
Please help - thanks!!!

vtec engaging - the weak vtec we have, i mean
you would not believe how it gets louder if you have a CAI or SRI...
c'est normal
bonne chance avec la neige cette semaine

@sdaidoji;
Good theory on the VTEC, but is it possible that some part(s) has weakened to make it kick in lower around 3000RPM as opposed to its normal 4500???
What part(s) would that be? Annnd, wouldn't that give out an engine code?
Tks
Montrealboi.
P.S.: Ouai, la neige c'est fuuuunnnnn!!!!! Civic just needs to be RWD, loool!

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

I have a P1259 code chart that shows 3200 RPM on D17A2.

@ezone:
OMG, I was misinformed....
You're completely right - verified on Wikipedia for my D17A2 engine and VTEC kicks in @3200RPM !!! Tks so much for setting me straight with that
Interesting indeed!
I also just spoke a friend, he says with the mileage my car has, it's due for the timing belt (which I'll be doing I the spring), but mostly he thinks this issue could be attributable to the idler pulley.
