erratic tach and speedo

Hi, i'm having trouble finding cause of erratic tach and speedo.

They are erratic because they sometimes work and sometimes don't.
the tach, when erratic, either just shakes or starts at wrong position. when it starts at wrong position, movement seems to be normal though. Usually, it can be reset to zero by turning key on/off several times untill needle goes back to zero. Each key on/off turns back needle by a few notch.

same description happens to speedo.

any help pls? thanks.

Re: erratic tach and speedo

I'm assuming you have a 7th gen civic.

1. push/hold the trip button.
2. turn the headlight switch on completely.
3. turn the ignition switch on to accessories (II).
4. (within 5 seconds) turn the headlight switch OFF, then ON, and OFF again.
5. (within 5 seconds) release the trip button
6. push and release the trip button 4 times repeatedly.

this starts the gauge cluster self diagnostics...

the beeper will sound
the lights will flash
the LCD will flash
the needles will sweep

if they/one does not sweep properly, replace the cluster.

Re: erratic tach and speedo

i tried gage cluster sweep test many times.
i got differing results.
- sweeps normal and returns to zero
- sweeps normal but returns to a position that is not zero
- shakes at end of right sweep then don't return

I think this covers it.

Re: erratic tach and speedo

A speedo shop may be able to repair yours if you aren't inclined to buy another cluster.
