2004 transmission downshift problem
2004 transmission downshift problem
Hey guys first post here. I've been reading through the forum and can't find a problem similar to mine. I got a 2004 dx sedan with an 4 speed auto. Ive had this problem for a while now.
When I slow down to turn a corner or stop at a light and then speed up before coming to a stop, the tranny does not shift down to first. It will stay in second, then lug down at a low rpm while I apply the throttle and then it will downshift and the rpms will rise. Sometimes it will do it from a complete stop as well, hot and cold. It downshifts on acceleration instead of when im slowing down. It only happens when i get to a very low speed or stop. When it does it when im stopped it downshifts pretty quickly after applying the throttle but when slowing down without stopping it sometimes lugs for 2-3 seconds.
Ive taken it to a tranny shop about a year ago, got the oil changed and they said I have to wait til the problem develps. It hasnt gotten worse since then but it is staying the same. Its more of an annoyance. If anyone has an idea of what it is i would be greatful.
thanks!

Re: 2004 transmission downshift problem
First, compare to an identical car.
Found this statement in service information:
Deceleration Control
When the vehicle goes around a corner and needs to decelerate first and then accelerate, the PCM sets the data for deceleration control to reduce the number of times the transmission shifts. When the vehicle is decelerating from speeds above 27 mph (43 km/h), the PCM shifts the transmission from 4th to 2nd earlier than normal to cope with upcoming acceleration.
The computer can watch the RATE of gas pedal change to determine when to shift. Slowly moving the pedal can sometimes give different shift points than if you rapidly move the pedal.
I know I can make some of the transmissions shift goofy if I don't keep a smooth foot on the gas pedal going through a turn.
I can't find a good shift schedule in the service info. IIRC the trans doesn't have to downshift to first unless you come to a complete stop, under some conditions. It can stay in 2nd if it wants to unless you give it a lot of gas pedal to force the downshift to 1st.
I can't tell if you have a real problem or not, based only on what I read here. I would probably put my scanner on it and watch the commanded gears and other data while having you drive the car to make it act up. If the commanded gear matches what the trans is actually doing, then I'd assume normal. If the trans isn't actually in the gear the scanner says, then we have a problem.
Again, see if you can drive another identical car to compare before you do much else.
And maybe change your trans fluid??--Honda DW-1 fluid.

Re: 2004 transmission downshift problem
Wow thanks for the quick and detailed reply!
Unfortunately I don't know anyone with the same car so I wouldn't be able to compare. What your saying definitely makes sense. It could be normal operation.
The thing that makes me wonder is when it does it when I've come to a complete stop. It should be in first. I have driven other models of cars and never had this happen. When it does it when I come to a complete stop it only does it when I'm stopped for a very short period of time. If stopped for more then a second it doesn't do it.
I will have to get a scanner and see if the command matches up. I was thinking maybe a sensor may be out or something like that, but I would think I would have other problems if that was the case.
Anyways thanks again for the help!

YW. I was just out wandering the streets and saw the post.
I have driven other models of cars and never had this happen. This is not "other models of cars".
This is a Honda, it's not like other cars.
Apple =/= Orange
Many brands of cars with electronically controlled transmissions can shift goofy if you blip the gas pedal a couple times in the middle of a maneuver. It defies and confuses the computer logic briefly.
Your car probably doesn't do this, but some do: When shifted from park to drive, many other Hondas will engage 2nd gear for about a full second before engaging 1st gear. I don't know of any other brand that did this. MANY people complained about the double bump feel simply because they weren't familiar with it.

Grade logic is very strange indeed, not sure how anyone with a heavy foot/spirited driving habits and these transmissions would get along.
For the double bump when 1st going N--> D I just hold the brake a little longer and it solves it.
