Transmission Help

Have a 2001 Honda Civic D17A1. My Automatic transmission suddenly started to have problems which seemed very weird. Car Functioned all normal all day today up until 8:00 tonight. On my way to Best Buy I started to notice the car had a longer gear change ration. I didn't think much of it cause it was normal on Hondas. When I was coming back car was doing fine this was 2 mins after I left. When I was driving the car felt like it had no power what so ever. I felt like I was driving in D2. When I came to a stop I put the car in park and then shifted to D. This is where it got ever worse. I was able to get my speed up to 30mph. but after that no matter how much the cars rpm were at the car will not accelerate at all. I stopped checked the transmission fluid. BONE DRY. Ran to the closest auto store got some Tranny fluid dumped it in the way Honda recommends to do it. Tried to move the car still wouldnt move. Eventually got it towed back to my house. I have no clue whats wrong with it. I need help will I need a new tranny or what?

Re: Transmission Help

Do you regularly check trans fluid level? Probably realize this, but it's non-negotiable in these 7th-gen automatics... esp those sold before they addressed the design flaws.

If it's not transmitting torque anymore... I'd say those clutches are toast. Forum tech vets will weigh in, but unless you have the time, room and the tools, a swap is probably going to be cheaper and easier (as long as it has the aforementioned flaws already fixed, such as '04-'05 autos).

Re: Transmission Help

Will the 04-05 trannys fit the D17A1. I also heard honda put warrantys on trannys that were effected.. I'm not sure if this is true or not. Also do you know any websites that may have transmissions for sale?

Re: Transmission Help

An acquaintance/friend has an'02 Civic with transmission issues. I do not have a Honda but would like to help before he takes it to AAMCO to have the transmission worked on. Another shop already quoted him $1400. Any advice on what I may check/change before he takes it this Friday?

Thank you very much and take care.

Is the car an Automatic? If it is a Automatic did stop moving no matter what gear it was in other then neutral from natural roll back?

Thank you for asking!

I found out about the issue over the weekend on Saturday after my son's First Communion. My family was going straight from Church to Dave and Busters for lunch and invited his school mate's family to go. They invited us over for their dinner party and we went straight from Dave and Busters. This is when I found out there was an issue with the nephew's car. I was still in a suit and it was a party, so I didn't quite get to much of any details of what was going on.

That said, I believe it is an automatic, but I'm not exactly sure what the symptoms are. I did ask him if he checked the fluid to see what it looked like and he said no. I'm not sure if he has checked like I asked him to.

I started searching for Civic forums and found there are issues with the automatic transmissions of this model year. It doesn't seem to sound good. Maybe I'll try to contact him later this morning to see if I can help him take a look. (I'm currently in the middle of changing a smog/air pump in a '92 190E as well.)

My bad, I can't believe I haven't already posted this. Have you checked www.car-part.com. It is used nationwide by recyclers to list items. I saw a large amount of transmissions there. I just couldn't tell which one is the correct one, and they seemed more expensive than the $1400 he was already quoted.

Re: Transmission Help

I am trying to align the trans. Shift Cable. No matter how it is moved it does not go into park with out serious effort.
Must the cable be adjusted from the bottom of the car?
