Transmission confusion
Transmission confusion
Hey guys new to civic forums thought id ask to see if anyone has had any past experiences like i have with this problem.
problems:
No reverse (budges but wont move)
cant go above 20 ish mph in Drive or about 2000-3000 rpm
engine light.
Got codes read at autozone and they were
P1298 and P 0370
the receipt for the codes says definition-Electrical load detector and faulty shift control system.
any help would be much appriciated thank you.

Re: Transmission confusion
I'd title this post 'automatic' transmission confusion, simply to aid searches for new posters in the future.
Sounds like a transmission shift solenoid failure -- but I'd let the vets here give you the experienced scoop.

Model?
Body?
Trim?
Engine?
Mileage?
Your location?
Ignore P1298 for the moment, that can't cause a trans problem.
P0370 does not exist.
P0730 is "problem in shift control system"
No reverse, won't go over 20....I bet it needs a trans.

(Meaning: It's probably time for another trans.)
if i drive in D3 i can reach speeds of around 50
Does the trans bind up in 1st?
At any point does it feel like it goes to neutral instead of engaging the next gear?
I found a bulletin for no movement in drive, code P0730, caused by worn 2nd gear clutch...

Re: Transmission confusion
An 01 with 185k on the original trans? You musta got a good one if it lasted that long.
(Meaning: It's probably time for another trans.)
What if you start with the shifter all the way back in 1st gear and manually upshift it through the gears?

Re: Transmission confusion
I realize it's an automatic..
You can manually shift an automatic trans, just pull the shifter all the way back, then bump it forward one notch for each next gear.
I was trying to figure out what was going on with being able to do 50 in D3 but only 20 in D.
Does it skip gears when driving in D? Erratic shifts? Flares between gears?
I'm trying to assess as many different symptoms as I can gather at once here.
The goal is to figure out if this is an internal trans problem or an electrical related problem outside of the trans.
But I think it's going to be internal, as in overhaul or replace.
Found this one in the troubleshooting charts:
Poor acceleration/ flares on starting off in D and D3/ stall speed high in R
Likely problem in 4th clutch
Next steps would involve checking fluid pressure for that clutch pack as part of a diagnosis.
