Weird noise suspension?

Just replaced the clutch in my car. I have this weird clunking noise when i take off but not when i brake going forwards. It does not happen when i take off in reverse but it happens when i brake going backwards.
Sounds like something in the suspension which i didnt actually take apart i took the axles and subframe out together just unbolted the shocks and subframe and took the axles out. I have no idea why it would only happen taking off forward and braking going backwards. makes no sense?

Re: Weird noise suspension?

Also the problem does not happen when the wheels are turned all the way.

at first i thought it was the trans until it happened when i braked going backwards.
also sideways doesnt do anything i was swerving from slow to 45mph.

Re: Weird noise suspension?

Ok top engine mount is broke and front trans mount has 1 of the 2 pieces of rubber broke, the lower a arm control arm whatever you wanna call it on both sides the rubber boot for the ball joint is ripped. Could either of these be the culprit? I would thing the ball joint would make noise when turning and not in a straight line? The engine and trans mount would make sense taking off but not when I brake going backwards.

Re: Weird noise suspension?

if your mounts are bad, broke or not bolted up with all the bolts, replace them and put all the bolts/nuts on to hold them down, if you don't it can break the trans/motor. With bad mounts, the motor will jerk back and forth under acceleration and breaking sometimes.

As for balljoints, raise the car so the front wheels are off the ground, use either a long bar or put your hand at 12 and 6 o*clock and pick the tire up and down. If you can feel play or movement, the balljoints are bad.

and why are you removing the subframe and suspension? Now you need to get the car aligned.

I know it can break the trans and motor, but the rear trans and top trans mounts are fine the engine mount is ripped but its sitting there and its not gonna move, im not actually driving it yet just trying and get it running but ive been going easy for now so motor shouldnt be moving, not redlining it or anything with broke mounts. Now if i floored it from a stop yes the top engine mount would probably lift off and drop the motor.

As for balljoints, idk if theyre bad but the boots are ripped, but to my knowledge they would make noise when turning not in a straight line?

And you have to remove the subframe and axles to get the transmission out, i know its gonna need aligned knew that when i took it apart, but alignment shouldnt be causing these noises at like 2 mph.

Re: Weird noise suspension?

are the front guards behind the rotors bent and rubbing the rotor?

if the engine mount is the one where the bracket sits and has one nut on top.. if that broke it will lift the motor up and slam it down as you move. if you take off fast enough, it will lift the motor and possibly hit the hood.

Sounds like your Wheel Bearings & Tie rods to me both are common problems .. this as happened to me as well replaced them and everything was fixed.. jack it up off the ground go to each wheel and see if it's got play Up & Down / Left & Right if is moves at all then there is your problem. If lose it causes noises like your describing. hope this helps .

Re: Weird noise suspension?

Well i jacked it up when i got home and apparently i didnt put the nuts back on the lower a arm ball joints there like halfway on, not sure if that would cause the noise but ill tighten them tommorrow and see.
yes fliptard thats the mount, hoods not on right now but ive been going slow on takeoffs. the noise only happens when going slow. and if it were a motor mount im not sure why it would happen braking in reverse.
you, nope i jacked it up today and theres no play in the wheels side to side or up and down, none at all.
My a arm bushings look good and there was no play in the a arms. if when i tighten up the ball joints the problem doesnt go away i have no clue.

Hmmm... Odd. are you sure your Upper rear camber bolts are tight Or (rear camber kit if you got it) that causes a taping nose . done that before as well... other then this I will have to think on it some more.... Also is it Slammed ? and does it still have the bump stops ?

Re: Weird noise suspension?

Everything is stock. Im going out as soon as it quits raining to look again and tighten my ball joints down Ill check out that rear camber bolt as well as the shocks and all that up there and see if its all good. Cause yesterday the lower suspension looked alright to me.
And if theres a bump stop on it stock then i didnt take it off, but im not bottoming out my suspension when it makes the noise.

Re: Weird noise suspension?

Ok my drivers side lower a arm front bushing is broken, that would be my guess as to why its making this noise. Hopefully after I change that the noise will stop.

Edit: Thanks everyone for your help glad i finnally got it figured out and that its not too expensive
im sure that the a arm bushing is the problem, i took my wheel off crow barring the front of the arm out putting a socket behind it (this is an extremely easy technique much easier than taking the arm off) and was gonna take the bushing out with an air hammer, didnt work, but i ended up taking the middle piece of metal out putting it back in and putting it all back together and the noise went away for like 1 minute i was hitting breaks going backwards and taking off with no noise. But of course it came back cuz its still broken, but it did go away so im sure thats the problem.

Im just gonna get some polyurethane because i gotta fix all but 1 of the motor mounts anyways so ill just do all my motor mounts in poly and do both the a arms.

Re: Weird noise suspension?

the bushing's in the arms need to be pressed out. Most of the time you need to cut the other part of the bushing because it rusts to the arm and will never come out, but be careful not to cut into the arm.
