'01 Civic LX Coupe AT P0740 Code won't go away!
Bought my 01 Civic from a friend with the CEL light, and was throwing the P0740 code - TCC solenoid needing replaced. 1st thing I did was change the trans fluid a few times, and every time, the CEL would stay off and then come back on within 2 weeks. So, found the correct part# for TCC solenoid - changed it and car is going into 4th very smoothly...can get it up to 60-70 mph and tach is between 2500-2800...sounds legit, right? Later the same day I installed new solenoid, the dang CEL comes back on and throwing the same code: P0740!
Anyone have a clue why it would shift fine, rpm's are fine - but still throw the P0740 code?
I've read it could be the torque converter o-ring leaking trans fluid internally and that would throw the code...????
I bought the car at a good price for my son who is starting college...I'm active duty Navy enlisted...so I would rather not, and really can't, spend $$$$$$ for new/rebuilt/reman trans & install, etc...unless that is my ONLY option...
Hence, I'm trying to head that off...
Any assistance would be well received!
Thanks,
Russ

Re: '01 Civic LX Coupe AT P0740 Code won't go away!
C&P from the Honda site: Code set condition: steady speed between 50 - 73 mph (81 -117 km/h) in D position
The mainshaft speed is 89% - 99% or less than the engine speed (depending on vehicle speed and throttle position) for at least 16 seconds.
Code sets when the computer detects the mainshaft speed is not equal to the engine RPM while the torque converter clutch was supposed to be fully applied. There could be many possible reasons for this, it would require serious testing and equipment to actually figure it out the right way.
Sorry, no silver bullet.
But there are a couple of informational bulletins addressing common causes of the code

CHECK YOUR VIN to see if this info applies to your car! (MSRP is about $212 USD for a reman converter through Honda, you can find it even cheaper online. Follow all instructions in the bulletin if you find the VIN of your car is a candidate for this repair.)
