When to replace rear drum brakes

My civic has 122000 on it I believe the rear pads are original. I did check them and they have pad left . I inspected them because I was getting a strange noise when hitting brakes hard going slow like when backing up or going forward at 5mph or less. It's like a creaking noise.... I believe it is from the shoes and hardware on the backing plate probably where one of the friction surfaces are that need brake grease. No biggie isn't hurting anything but when do you guys determine that you should do you rear brakes?

I had that noise and pads since new. I have 360000 kms on my chassis and just changed the shoes a couple days ago and greased everything. Squeak is gone

Usually back doesn't need to be done until the next front brake job. They generally wear out twice as slow as the fronts, but should be inspected for wear to make sure.

Twice as slow? Try about 5:1. Five sets (or more) of fronts to one set of rear shoes.

Around here, the original shoes can last the life of the car. Unless someone puts cheap shoes on.

They all squeak when you pump the pedal though, seems like it starts about 75-90k. Needs greased on the backing plate contact pads, 6 per wheel. I like to use Moly grease.

Probably for a while, although probably not for a long time as that stuff tends to dry out in a short time.
