Re: HELP! 2004 Civic SI

If you bring in your own keys, they may charge for cutting them now.

Additionally, (and I say this because I know just how many expensive blanks get screwed up by the parts people trying to cut keys) it might be better to have the dealer supply the keys they are attempting to cut. That way if they screw it up or the blank is wrong, it's on them not you.
Just a thought, YMMV.

Remove the black things at the end by the key. Reconnect them to the car. Stick your key through the hole and let it dangle there. This lets the immobilizer read the key.

Remove the ignition switch from the opposite end. Plug it in to the car.
Use a screwdriver to twist it to start the car.

Drive to the dealer or a lock shop.

You will need new screws or adapt something else to reassemble the mess to the column.

HTH
ok Ignition is off!!! I dangled the key through the immobilizer and tried starting it with a screwdriver. It turns over but the car will not start. I had to jump it because the battery was dead but still not starting up. I'm not sure if I have to unplug the battery for a bit to reset it or if its something with the immobilizer or maybe its something completely different. I just bought the car like this so it could be anything. I'm going to stick with the antitheft idea first though before I drive myself crazy. Any Ideas? Thanks again

Re: HELP! 2004 Civic SI

See my PM I just sent you, and

Is there any aftermarket alarm stuff on the car?

Should be no need for any reset if everything is factory.

How long since the car last ran?

Re: HELP! 2004 Civic SI

Alright, finally back at it as of today. I really hope to get this thing running this week but I am still lost as to what is going on with it. The way the ignition is now set up is with the old(original) key being help through the immobilizer loop and the new key is in the switch to start the car. Technically it seems that this should work but the car only turns over but does not start. I tried spraying starting fluid in while cranking it but no change. I havent checked for spark yet because I need to run and buy a spark plug socket. Any idea's? I'm wondering if the key is still causing the issue and is just being tempermental. The green "key" light in the guages blinks while cranking over as well. Thanks so much guys

Re: HELP! 2004 Civic SI

orrr is there any way to "unjam" the old ignition that I now have out of the car? If i could get that old free to even try turning over once I would be able to solve if its the key itself or now.

The green "key" light in the guages blinks while cranking over
Don't bother checking for spark. Wrong approach.

Green key flashing while cranking: Key is not recognized by the immobilizer unit--or the unit is not able to read the key.
Same result, the engine will not run.

The only time the green key should flash is after you shut the ignition off.

You must use the original key and the original immobi ring together. (The 7 wire connector, not the 6 wire connector.)
Did these ever work correctly in this car? (I can't remember now)
You cannot use the ring off of the new lock right now, it is not programmed to the car.

You could remove the ignition switch electrical portion from the column lock assembly and then use a screwdriver to turn it. But your issue is with the immobi right now.

Re: HELP! 2004 Civic SI

Also the car hasnt ran in about 4 months i'd say. One other thing i was wondering, The ignition that I pictured earlier in these posts is the EXACT one I bought. Once I got it i took the key out and its a different style key?! The ignitions are IDENTICAL but the key on the replacement looks more like a normal key and not the wierd inverted cut one. Side by side they are exact and the clip all clip in fine as well. Is this going to be a problem when I go to reprogram it? Thanks so much

Ohhhhh, ummm, no clue at the moment.
You got an early lock (normal key cut) and a late car (sidewinder key cut).

According to this, they should both be the same type of immobilizer so I would guess it can work.... http://www.mediafire.com/?8jzuf1zxmjh

Re: HELP! 2004 Civic SI

This is already seeming to make me feel a little better because for the past week I have been trying to figure it out. The green Key light has always blinked while turning over I believe. I thought that it stopped but I dont think i let it crank for long enough to notice it's still blinking.

To clarify: I have the Original 2 clips(imobilizer rings) plugged into the car. The original key is being held through those. Than the new ignition is only connected to the ignition switch so I do not have to use a screwdriver to turn over(should work the same I believe). I will go double check everything witht the clips again in a sec

Re: HELP! 2004 Civic SI

Well, since the ignition problem I meant. I think since I tried pulling out the ignition it has been blinking. I read the part of that manual you sent that mentions using a blank key to do a "brake start" maybe I could try that and drive to the dealer to reprogram if that works. But I don't know how you get the brake code for it.

Re: HELP! 2004 Civic SI

ok, Tried to jump it. I double checked the key and I actually got the "green key light" to turn off while holding the key in the immobilizer. I made a video of everything to see if that could help. I also tried the brake trick just in case but it was a no go.

youtube link is here -----> http://youtu.be/Ga5-4vT9uUM

Re: HELP! 2004 Civic SI

If it is cranking without the green key flashing, you have succeeded in getting the immobilizer to read the key. Don't bother with the brake code at this point.

Dude, it has no compression.
Start with basic diagnosis.
A compression test will probably tell you there is little or no compression on all cylinders.
Now figure out WHY.
Back to basics.
Tons of possible causes.

Have you ever seen this engine run?
When?
Why was the car parked?
What has happened since that time?
How many miles?
Oil change history? Oil quality?
Chain jumped time?

Any codes? Start with this, even though it doesn't run. See if there is anything important in the computer memory.

Oil the cylinders to restore ring seal?

Re: HELP! 2004 Civic SI

Watched the video again, I saw 177,000 miles, even.
Is this why it was parked? It wouldn't run back then either?

It is ripe to crap a timing chain, especially if oil change maintenance has been lax. I might decide to pull the valve cover to check timing marks, depending on the resulat of my other evaluations.

Re: HELP! 2004 Civic SI

Yeah that's crappy, I'm sure the guy you bought it from knew there was something wrong with the motor. Hopefully the timing chain slipped.

I wonder if he jacked up the ignition somehow so he could sell the car saying it had a simple problem to fix.

Have you ever seen this engine run?
No

When?
Never

Why was the car parked?
I was told 5 months ago when the ignition locked up

What has happened since that time?
Sat, Was flatbed towed to my house. I Took the ignition out.

How many miles?
177,000
Oil change history? Oil quality?
Don't know. Low oil

Chain jumped time?
Havent checked

Any codes? Havent checked yet either.

I thought it sounded like there was no compression but I was just really hoping it was just me. The guy was a best friend of a friend so I was hoping he wouldnt try to screw me over on it but idk.
I'll try checking all of these questions in further detail in the next day or 2. Thankd so much for your guys help. I know the timing belt looked to be in really shitty shape but not broken or torn yet.

It doesn't have a timing belt. I saw a K motor in the video, it has a timing chain.
It does have an accessory belt (serpentine).

ahhh i'm smart lol i'll have to try to oil the rings. you do that by putting oil in through the spark plug holes, correct? and than i'll have to check the timing and the codes as well

Re: HELP! 2004 Civic SI

How low is the oil? The timing chain uses the engine oil as lube so if it was poorly maintained that could reduce the life of the chain.

I'm not sure but I thought I read somewhere the timing chain in those motors should be replaced at 150k?

3oz of oil in each cylinder, leave plugs out and crank the motor.

replaced at 150k?

I don't think that is specified anywhere by the manufacturer.

Yeah, don't do like the last person I told this to, they screwed the plugs back in and tried to crank it, locked up the engine.
