Screeching noise

I've got a HORRIBLE screeching noise in my 2005 Civic LX. The noise happens when I first start the vehicle and eventually goes away. It also happens when I've got the heat or the AC on which leads me to believe that it's some sort of fan belt, but I'm not 100% sure. If anyone can help me out more than the idiots from Autozone, I'd appreciate it. The car is a 5 speed if that matters at all.

Re: Screeching noise

The alternator belt is loose.
Inspect it, see if it needs replaced. Replace it if necessary. Replace both belts if necessary.

Why is the belt loose?
Was the belt recently replaced?
Was a timing belt recently replaced?

If it was an aftermarket alt belt, it probably stretched. Inspect it to make sure it is still good, and tighten it. (Factory belts don't stretch nearly as much as aftermarket seems to.)

Make sure the alternator bolts are tight, or you risk roasting your PCM.
