Fuel Tank Issue

Hi Everyone,

I own a 2002 Civic LX and I have had this problem since I got it (used):
One day I got in my car and the gas gauge read 1/4 tank, but the car didn't start. It turned over fine and everything seemed to be working (I could hear the fuel pump engage even). So, I put a couple of gallons of gas in and it started right up. Then I filled the tank and I put in the correct amount to fill from 1/4 tank (about another 8 gallons to make a total of about 10 gallons to fill the 13 gallon tank). Later I was driving the car and the gauge indicated about 1/4 tank and it started to sputter like it couldn't get gas. Fortunately I was right near a gas station so I pulled in and again put about 10 gallons in which, again, is basically spot on based on the gas gauge. This also happened the day I bought the car. It sputtered just before we parked and then when we went to start the car it turned over just fine, but it wouldn't start. We added some gas and away we went.

Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong? Is it the fuel pump getting old? Do I need to take the tank out and clean it or something like that?

Thanks for the help!

Re: Fuel Tank Issue

1. Push and hold the trip/reset button.
2. Turn the lighting switch on.
3. Turn the ignition switch on.
4. Within 5 seconds, turn the lighting switch OFF, then ON and OFF again.
5. Within 5 seconds, release the trip/reset button, then push and release the button 4 times repeatedly.

This starts the Gauge cluster self diagnostics.
The beeper will sound, the lights will flash, the LCD will flash, and most importantly, the needles will sweep all the way back and forth. If they/one does NOT sweep properly, replace the cluster.

To exit diagnostics, turn off the ignition.
-----------------

If you need a new gauge cluster try eBay, local CL, or here for nationwide salvage listings: http://www.car-part.com/

*You can only use 2001-2002 clusters unless you re-wire for the LED cluster: https://www.civicforums.com/forums/1...faq-video.html

Gotta run right now. If the gauge is fine I'll post up the fuel sending unit test when I get home later.
