Classic Manual Tranny Imput bearing Failure&Repair
Classic Manual Tranny Imput bearing Failure&Repair
I have a 99 Civic, with the bad imput bearing described in the Sticky.Curious as to how long it will make noise before it does great damage, also wondering if the repair is same as 7th generation, and how hard it would be to repair.I read about how to do it above,it`s the splitting the cases&removing the diff gears, how hard is this from someone that`s done it.I can search a Honda parts page to see if it`s the same part#.I`m also assuming replacing worn synch`s is gonna be much more complicated.

not for the faint of the heart, i am afraid. trans is trick and a lot of work and lots of specific tools. And if you mess something, you need to do all it again.
pick a haynes manual in any autostore, they go trhrought the trans rebuild process for the 7th gen, not sure for the 6th gen manual.
also, download the service manual from here:

Thank`s,I was just going from the Sticky above,it made just replaceing the imput bearing sound kinda simple.
I have a Haynes manual, for the 6th gen.It tells you to take it to the shop for the rebuild.Book is 8yrs or so old, maybe newer manuals more detail.I will also check out the link you posted.
Thanks Again,Dizz

Well, still looking at maybe buying a rebuilt unit from autozone,or possibly a used unit.I also have some slight clicking noise from right front end, maybe CV joint, since mine have 245K,but these usually make more noise in full turns,it dosen`t change my noise.I have no noise at over 30mph,even from the input bearing, but I`m half deaf!
I can grab my driveshaft on passenger side and move it up&down 1/8" or so,right where in comes out of transaxle, maybe normal.I`d hate to install new imput bearing&have other driveshaft bearings go out a short while later.Just not sure what to do at this point,or maybe just keep driving it,since I may need a new tranny anyway, and maybe nothing more to hurt by just driving the wheels off it.

I am wrong, you can still hear the whine at about any speed,if car is quiet.I think the noise is getting worse, with some clicks now,1st thought the cv joint was also going bad,but I think it is still imput bearing, maybe axle bearings also.
