5200 RPM rev limit???

Why is my engine limited to 5200RPM?
The CEL is not on and the MPG is really low. 17.8 MPG.
I searched and found the forgotten tune up thread and thank you
Gearbox for that!!!
My engine is the D17A1 in a 2001 Civic Sedan.

Thank you!

Nathan

Re: 5200 RPM rev limit???

No check engine light with a 5200 RPM limit? Hmmmmmm.......

Did this just start suddenly or have you done some work to your car and it started doing it afterwards. I found this answer :

found the problem my oil pressure sensor and my thermostat sensors are exactly the same and i switched them. Switched them back and it can redline now. thanks everyone for your inputs.

It's for a 6th gen but it might help. Also, check for stored codes. Might be a VTEC solenoid malfunction. It SHOULD throw a code but who knows.

Re: 5200 RPM rev limit???

He has an -a1, Tom, no VTEC.. lol

I am intrigued by this though.

I would check for stored codes, but anything that would limit your revs would illuminate the CEL

Re: 5200 RPM rev limit???

I have zero mods to this engine.
The only work to it is oil changes this 18 months.
I had a CEL two weeks ago for the gas cap being loose and that was the only
code on my reader.
I reset the ECU and told my wife again that when she refuels to tighten the gas cap at least six clicks.
I don't know if the ECU is familiar with my wifes' driving after about 400 miles?

The 5200 rev limit is really weird. It does it in neutral. I don't know if it does it in drive.

We are kicking *** here in Alabama. There is so much support, and I want to say thank you to all of those helping!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: 5200 RPM rev limit???

I had a similar issue with my 02 - no power, rev limit, and big drop in MPG. turned out to be a block CAT.

Re: 5200 RPM rev limit???

um, im pretty sure most cars will not let you rev to redline in neutral nor should you ever be doing that cause it ruins the engine running it without load. in the EX, vtec will not engage either and rpms are limited if you rev it in neutral.

What?
Please elaborate.
I have a 1988 Acura Integra that will redline in neutral.
I had a 2001 Jeep Cherokee that would redline in neutral.
I had a 2003 Nissan that would redline in neutral.
I had a 1994 Jeep Wrangler that would redline in neutral.
I could go on and on.

Without load is the ideal condition for an engine. Load equals wear.

Respectfully,

Nathan

Re: 5200 RPM rev limit???

ive been in alot of cars that are limited to 3500 rpms when revved in neutral. mostly fords and other domestics, but some imports too. i guess i shouldve been more specific. revving in neutral once the engine is fully warmed up is okay. the actual engine damage is caused by redlining more than a second (which is much easier to do in neutral than while driving under load). so yeah technically revving below redline does not hurt, its revving to redline and holding there for more than a second or two that can cause excess wear and possibly failure if you do it often enough. ive seen plenty of engines destroyed by idiots revving and bouncing off the limiter 5-10 secs at a time and then boom either smoke comes out or the engine wont turn anymore. some guy did this at the last show i was at with his srt4. engines were not made to run at redline continuously.

Re: 5200 RPM rev limit???

I understand.
I am not one of those idiots that redlines for the hell of it, ever.
After 36 years on this planet I have learned a thing or two.
I just happened to get my shoe tread stuck and accidently hit 5200 redline which raised my concern. New shoes with sharp tread in a car I rarely drive but know more than I want to.

Thank you for your elaboration.

Re: 5200 RPM rev limit???

@ Biscuit

I'm assuming that it has some miles being a 2001.

Possible causes:
1. needs a tune-up (plugs, air filter)
2. old, worn out coils
3. old, worn out injectors
4. old, worn out fuel pump
5. old, worn out fuel filter
6. old, worn out catalytic converter

All of those except the plugs and filter should automatically throw a code. That's about all I can thank of right now.

Re: 5200 RPM rev limit???

to add to GB's response, an unloaded engine will naturally rev up faster than a loaded engine. So when the rev limiter kicks in, it went slightly above redline due to its reaction time. It could just be too late by then.

If the car is driving fine, not even sure why to bother with it, actually.

A Daymler benz transmission engineer once said that they had to program the trans to just... ignore the driver under certain circumstances.

Like when an idio.. happy new owner of a Mercedes tried to shift to first at 100kph. The early version of the trans simply... shifted. He showed a pic of the block - it had a clean "rod shaped" hole in it.

The lower rev limiter is there for same reason. for idio.. drivers that try to do it.

Re: 5200 RPM rev limit???

Took the car for a drive.
I hit the rev limit in first gear.
Must be a weird Honda D17A1 ecu thing limiting revs in neutral?
Yesterday a dude I don't know revved at me in his 8th gen SI and bounced on the redline while I was in my sweet 88 Integra SE.
I guess his foot got an erection?
